you can only use 4.6 oil pans if you want it in your mustang. the timing procedure is the same as far as I know and you will need an 8 bolt flywheel.

the timing procedure is a little different on the 5.4 the 4.6 motor has an even amount of links so you just line up the gold links at opposite ends with the marks on the cams and on the crank. The 5.4 has an odd amount of links so you'll have one link marked on one side and two links marked on the other so you'd line the one mark with the crank and the mark on the cam would go between the two marked links it's not difficult just a little different

Im just wondering because the chains are longer, might be different, and why would i need an 8 bolt flywheel? the engine is a windsor and my 4.6 is a romeo, which only has 6 bolts right?
Setting the timing chains on the 5.4 are a little different than on the 4.6 because of the added length. Just like on the 4.6, you orient the chains to find the opposite links, the bottom dot on the crank will line up with the copper link, but up top you need to split the timing dots in the middle of 2 chain links. The chain has one additional link from making it truly symmetric. You can kind of see what I am describing in this photo:

Yes, you will need an 8-bolt flywheel, all 5.4's have an 8-bolt crank. Your Romeo 4.6 is 6-bolt and will not work.

the 5.4 has an 8 bolt flywheel, or flexplate i dont know, when the guy removed the motor, the torque converter was on the flywheel,it was an automatic, and my car is an automatic, so i just mount the torque converter to the flywheel, and it should be it, right?

5.4 mustang with an automatic transmission? haha i just want a gt that can take most cars out there, for a D/D anyway, any body guess what my weekend toy is? just dont look at my display name.

Autos use flexplates, manuals use flywheels. And yes, you should be fine.

What a great way to simulate the body, especially on the passenger side. That is the side with the least clearance, and will be the tightest to fit properly. I still plan to make myself a set of these over the winter. It will be quite a project to say the least. I was watching an episode of Trucks on Spike the other day and they used some weld sleeves to assist in the pipe alignment when modifying a set of headers. I finally found them on the web: http://www.streetperformance.com/par...-12101hkr.html

quick question i dont have adjustable timing gears are they absolutely necessary for degreeing my CMS stage 2s on the 5.4? i wouldnt think maybe 2 or 3 degrees at most maybe not even that would be to far off so far i just have it set with the timing mark in the middle of the 2 marked links on cam gears and the 1 marked link right on the tooth for the crank timing mark. but i have been known to be wrong so just want to make sure

picking up a few things tonight:

Aeromotive A1000, twin 10micron filters, pump controller, weld-in sump
Aquamist Methanol injection kit (with a programmable controller)
new TB (I have 2 already but I'm making my own single blade from those, needed a stocker as a backup)
Griggs Tq arm (which will be for sale)
MM PHB (ditto on selling)
03 cobra IRS (selling)
Other stuff you'll just have to find out about later.

I'm keeping mine... just picking up some spares for cheap, mostly to sell to you jokers on the cheap.

The controller...not sure. But it comes with the pump and filters so I won't bitch.

Well that took forever! It took me a few hours last night and all day today to get through all 7190 posts.

I got turned onto this swap by Bob from HPS. I fly for a company in El Paso and HPS is working with my boss on his Top Alcohol dragster.

I don't have a car yet, but I'm planning on doing a quick and stock swap like myillwillinc's orginal 5.4 swap. I'm looking for a dirt cheap 96-98 and use a PI engine.

Thanks to all the guys on here for the awesome info!

For your viewing pleasure. A while back a Memeber of the Crown Vic Board dropped a 5.4 SOHC into is 1997 Lincoln Town Car. Race weight was around the 4500lbs mark. The car had normal bolt on's and was N/A

Shows what these motors can really do.
