chip and I are both looking at some pretty aggressive build ups. I know mine will be streetable from the motor side but only just barely.
I talked to my head porter again today. He's almost finished. Just have a little work on the combustion chamber and finish sanding and I'll be able to slap it back together. And I still haven't gotten my pistons. I'm about to tell them to send me any friggen .020 over flat top and a set of rings or use my TRW's and not even bother with the overbore. Naw... I'm waiting like a good boy. dammit.

if you don't have one built already it won't be much help to either of us. I have to keep it pretty quiet too... there are business concerns in play that need to be watched carefully.

TwinTurbo, i want those pistons, but a flat top piston will yeild too much compression for what i am building.
r3dn3ck, my project is also being planned as "STREETABLE" (bout 600hp OFF the "SAUCE" streetable) i have been to the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detriot, MI, and i plan on driving my car there once its done. (10hrs 550miles away) so NO corners will be "CUT!!!!!!"

update... I've had TMD cancel the Mahle pistons since they have to mine the fuggin aluminum or something... in any case 3 months and no slugs yet so we said screw it. Instead, they'll be sending me some Probe 4.5cc dished which I should get in a few days. So, back to the waiting game.

r3dn3ck, dude why didnt you say MAHLE pistons? the shop they will be made at is less than 30 min from my house. i could have picked them up for you and sent them out myself. i used to work there.

they just don't have any in the size and style I wanted. They've pushed my order out 3 months in a row now so I said screw it and got the Probe SRS. It's easier that way.

ok guys... here is the question i'm stumped on with this build.
should i go with some built 2v heads and cams or pick up some cobra heads and go with those and later add hi-po cams? i will have a custom intake made for the 4v heads and the adapters and hps intake for the 2v.

I'd stay with 2v and get some stage 3 porting on the heads with as wild a cam as you cam get away with. Wiring from 2v to 4v is a PITA and kinda time consuming, then there's the year to year differences. If you can get 230cfm at .500 lift then you can see some impressive hp numbers without losing all the low end.
power for power, 4v is the way to go but for ease and still making good sickening power, 2v is a straight swap.
besides... if you hurry and get that motor together in 2v form I'll be forced to send you a HPS intake to do some testing on (and return to me hehehe).

This has probably already been discussed but I can't seem to find it. I'm trying to plan ahead with my mods to do the 5.4L swap and want to do things the right way to minimize wasted $$$. I'm about to order my gears, but wanted to make sure I got something that would compliment the 5.4 and still whip it in the 4.6. Would 4.10's be the best choice or should I go with something like a 3.73?
#778
5.4's are torque monsters... you don't need anything but 3.27's, hell you could slap a 3.08 gear set in there and it'll still be fast as hell. I wouldn't go over 3.55's until you've mastered the art of feathering the clutch with the 5.4 in there. Anything under a 3.27 is still giving away a lot in trade for higher top speed.
4.10's are just too much gear IMHO... there's just too much torque low in the RPM band to need them.

While on the topic, I am planning my budget and have a few questions. I am planning on building a high compression engine (between 10-11:1) and have a few questions on parts. What would best compliment the compression in terms of heads and cams (I am looking at Patriot Stage III and Crane's 2nd or 3rd stage PI cams)? Also, is the stock oil pump sufficiant along w/ the pan? In addidtion, due to cash restraints, I will have to use the TR3650 trans for awhile. Will it be able to handle the torque w/ an occasional sprint or would I have to baby it. Also, would the rear end be on its limits w/ the stock 28 spline axles? Also, w/ Eibach springs (1.5" drop), how much more will the front drop? In terms of intake, would I have a clearence problem using the F-150 5.4 intake and if I do, can I just use the Mustang plenum w/o cruise control to avoid any cutting? Lastly, when is the 5.4 intake due to come out?
