I'm not looking for an all out rocket for daily driving but i want it to lay down the smack when it needs to. When you thinkin of swaping cams Illwill? My motor wont be here for 2 more weeks the price was right though $250.00 and getting it delivered for free. Its makin some low end noise but i was gonna rebuild it anyway.

if you rebuild it, i'd go with flat top slugs if going NA, if you go with cams, make sure you get springs also. i'm just throwing it out there, if no interest, i won't pull them.

scrooloose... good plan. The stock 9.2-9.5:1 or so is great for up to 10-12 lbs of boost. After that you'll need lower compression to allow you to run a properly aggressive tune without donating a bunch of ponies to the pumping-losses gods or needing to run octane booster/race gas.

5.4vortech: www.car-part.com is a great source of finding motors. Also check your local craigslist and wrecking yards. It's best to buy it complete from heads to oil pan (no intake/exhaust).

For the flywheel, we'll need to know what year car you have to identify the clutch size for the flywheel. In general it's best to use one from any 99-01 cobra, or 2000 model year GT's. I'd just go to d&d transmissions and get one of their OEM takeoff nodular iron flywheels. They're only 50 bucks. Note, I use a aluminum flywheel and it's kinda bitch to get used to to start with. The reduced rotating mass makes starting out a little harder so I really do recommend either steel or iron.

Guys: I'll be a little irregular for a few days... just closed on my new house and I'm finishing moving in. Things are nutty as a PayDay right now thanks to that but I don't want to neglect y'all. If you guys need something critical, myillwill knows how to get hold of me.

I have a couple extra 8-bolt flywheels for when you are ready. It's heavy as hell, so shipping may be a little expensive. Make me an offer if you want it.

you have a 10.5" clutch and flywheel. Just make sure you get a flywheel for a 10.5" clutch and it'll be gravy.

one more thing..me and a good friend are going to put this motor in. im going to get a REALLY, and i mean really good deal on some 4.6 longtube headers. i know its a PITA to get these to fit right but he is a really good exhaust fabricator. im just looking to see how much hassle he will have by doign this. i mainly need to know where im going to have the fitment issues...

In short, Alot. I think the fitment issues depend on the brand but I couldn't tell you exactly. Be prepared to cut them up.

buy a whole box of bends and be ready to basically make a new set of headers. BBK and Mac both require substantial modification to both sides. You'll need to add vertical length, subtract horizontal run, change the order of tubes into the collector, and figure out how to get around the starter. On the driver side you'll have less fun as the steering shaft is a bitch to get around. It'll take on average 20-30 hours of solid pounding to nail a set.

If the order in which the tubes enter the collector have to be changed, it may be more wroth it to just cough up the cash for 5.4 headers since messing w/ something as little and as important as that can cost you some power.

wow, lol, i think ill just wait for the headers to come out. the money just for the fabrication would be the cost of the new 5.4 headers that would fit with no modification....

Hello People.

I have been watching this thread for months and am really interested in doing the swap in my 96 GT. I have a 5.4L SOHC that came out of the F150 and I need to know what all I will need for the swap. I am wanting to do just the stock engine for now and want to spend little as possible but have it reliable as well. Any info or advice?

HPS intake, modified midpipe/slight trimming of the stock exhaust manifolds, and possibly a different set of heater hoses. I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can remember

audi: nope... that's it. you got it. Need to spread the crossover on the h-pipe out a bit (exhaust shop, 50 bucks), HPS intake is 695 shipped, heater hose (replace hard line with soft and a couple fittings) 20 bucks. You use your stock oil pan and oil pickup tube, your stock accessories and your stock exhaust manifolds or the headers when they come out here pretty soon. After that you'll need a tune and you're off to the races.

The new headers will make power there's no doubt about that. They'll fit well too. Until you get under there and really start messin' with the pipes you can't even imagine how big a PITA it is to make em. If you've got a buddy with time to spare though that may be a fast route. We've already seen that my header project is over due by more than 5 months as it stands. THey will come out... pretty soon.

Thanks for the input. I actually do have a friend that is a certified weilder and is pretty good at exhaust and tubing. Another thing, will my PI heads from the 4.6 just swap over and cams, what are your suggestions?

heads will swap directly over.

cams: there is a huge amount of debate on this but suffice it to say that if you want maximum return then custom grinds from HiTech or Cushman are probably your best bet. Other than that, AFM, MPH, Comp, Crower, all make good off the shelf grinds. I'd start with a stage 2 cam (HiTech stage 2 or comp xe270ah-13 could both be considered stage 2 for comparison purposes). You can run just about any off the shelf cam with the 5.4 without much of any concern about PTV.

NA_SVT has a good head for this sort of thing so I'll leave it to him to chime in with a really proper suggestion.

I use a comp270 and I'm pretty happy with it. Good strong bottom end (stock PI cams have way too much bottom end IMO for the 5.4 2v in a car, for a truck they're great... not for a car though), devastating mid-range and plenty of pull to about 5000-5500rpm. If I'd have known about HiTech when I started looking for cams I'd have gotten a set of theirs though.

I would like to know what he has to say. I am from East TN and we have a lot of factory ricers and some modified rice and you don't see a lot of american muscle. Now don't get me wrong imports are nice and I favor nissan then any others, but my point is I want this little stang to be a stallion and running the game. Now I don't plan on doing this all at once, but you have to start somewhere. And this swap is easy. I can't wait to get my hands dirty with this project.
