Help me figure this out please?
I drive a 2000 3.8L V6 Stang. I bought it used with 90K and have owned it 15 months now. It has 119K miles now.
The problem is whenever I slow to a stop underneath the car (sounds like it is coming from the gear shifter,(auto tranny)) it sounds like a small jackhammer is banging. It also does this sometimes in the low gears. Sorry, I must confess Im not too savy with repairs. Any ideas???

i might have the same problem.
I got my 2000 3.8l mustang about 14 months ago with 92k miles on it. It has 106k now.
I have the same jackhammer noise, but it only happends when im in drive, but idle (like a stop light or sign.) And when the a/c is on, when i accelerate it does it as well. Comming from the same place.

Just throwing this out there but could these be loose transmission mounts and the tranny is vibrating at idle against the floor pan or its mount. when you are driving is would be under torque and twisting the tranny either away from whatever it would be vibration up against or either pushing it firmly against something causing it to not vibrate under power.
Probobly not. But my best shot in the dark.
