Default How to go about SCT chip tuning on my 95 GT with 5.8L??

Hello all! I've got a quick question...I've got a 95 GT that I've recently dropped a crate 351w from a 96 econoline van, added Edelbrock Performer heads, GT40 intake, 1.6 roller rockers, stocker cam, stock 95 GT TB, and a Mac 76mm MAF calibrated for the 36 lb/hr injectors I installed...

My question is this---> I know I'm going to go with an SCT 4 bank chip, but am unsure on what route to go... I know there are some SCT dealers that also offer dyno tuning, but since my engine combo really isn't radical at all, I was wondering if I would be all right getting one of these chips from AmericanMuscle.com with the free 1 tune and just tell them what I've got to get the thing running pretty good for now, and do additional tuning on a dyno later?

I ask because I put the motor in, and it starts right up, and idles, but just acts funny...if the engine is revved up at all, it takes quite a few seconds to "calm" back down to the appropriate idle rpm, as well as the thing just has no power, surges, and the check engine light is on. I'm thinking the engine should easily be a 300 hp engine, and that's with a simple tune. Anyways, thanks for everyone's time, and thanks for the replies in advance.

I don't think they will give you a tune for that. They will most likely say it's too radical of a combo for their tunes. If you do go with the chip you will need a dyno tune. If you went with a tuner you could take data logs and get email tunes from somewhere like VMP. You could send them an email to be sure though http://www.americanmuscle.com/info.h...botnav#contact hope this helps.

Hey, thanks for the reply!

I'm pretty sure they could give me a simple enough tune to at least make it run decently enough to putt around town, as I've had friends who have gotten the 4 bank for their 94/95 5.0 turbo cars... but I've also contemplated getting the piggy back plug-in systems that allow one to just hook an A9L comp from the earlier foxbody EFI cars...
I know either way I would need a dyno, I just want to get this running better than it is now, ya know? Thanks again for the info though, because I just emailed them.

you need to really slap that bitch on a dyno or you're just guessing that it's ok or not. It's no different than the swap I did and the tune is pretty significantly different in some really subtle places that aren't easy to find. You're going to LOVE the new guts but please do yourself a favor and get a proper tune on it on a dyno.

What swap did you do? I'm not questioning the need for a dyno, as that would be a must, eventually. I had an 89 stang I built with a head/cam/intake Probe bottom-end 8.5 to 1 comp. 306 with a home built T70 turbo kit and it only was being run with an A9L and a wideband O2 sensor setup, and ran pretty well. Yes, it needed to get on a dyno to "smooth" out the fuel curve to make it run smoother, but without tuning the car made 496 rwhp/560 rwtq. But please don't get me wrong, I reiterate that I agree with you on the need of a dyno. The problem is that the closest dyno to me is nearly 3 hrs away, and with just starting residency at a local orthotics/prosthetics clinic, taking time to leave for the dyno regularly just aint gonna happen...lol I would DEFNITELY get this thing on a dyno, when I could, but really want to know for sure whether or not I could pop the chip in with a basic tune based on the mods I've done thus far and be able to drive down the road to get it aligned...
I do appreciate everyone's insight thus far. Thanks again

To get it to run right it needs a good tuner and a dyno. Take a day off and go get it done.

Yeah, as of right now I've got it narrowed down to DallasMustang in Dallas (of course) and SWTuning in OKC, OK. Thanks for the info guys, it was much help.

As long as you stay out of WOT I don't see the tiniest problem running the 5.8 on a 5.0 tune. It'll idle funny and probably stall a bit until the adaptives get updated but it's a total non issue if you're smart about how you drive it.

You don't even have to baby it... just stay out of the throttle. Past half throttle is where I call it on untuned cars. You seem to already have enough experience to know what's up so just use your head. The 5.4 swap took probably 40 man hours but I had a pretty non-standard setup and a bunch of prototype parts. With retail parts and the average list of bolt-ons it's bound to be much easier.

Yeah, just cruising around the streets surrounding the shop it does just fine...haven't gotten it out on a pedestrian road as of yet since it needs a re-alignment after I installed the tubular K-member/A-arms...I'm DEFINITELY NOT a "front end" guy...lol thanks again for the help fellas
