Default What will new cams do for my car?

Yeah I know, I suck. But, what are cams? Can they go in sixers? All I know is they add a bunch of horses and make a nice sound. How much will they cost? All the info about cams you could possibly tell me would be great. Thanks.

Alright blaze I will give you the lil bit of info that I (think) I know about cams.

In short they help your engine breath better.

The how. . .
Basicly the cam tells the valves/lifters when to open and close, Different cams have different grinds on them for different purposes. The "grind" refers to how a cam is made to determine the LIFT and DURATION of the lifters. If your intake valve is open longer and wider then ofcourse you get more air, same story with the exhaust valve too basicly.

Most folks wait till toward the end of their building process (if its done a little along the line) to upgrade the cam because in order to get full benefits from the cam you should have the other bolt ons with it such as long tube headers, intake, TB, plentum ect. to compliment it. Also most people have a tuner and or chip done by the time they get full bolt ons too. Each mod does very little by itself but by the time you put them all together and tune it, all the mods come alive and work better together. When you DO upgrade the cam, most likely you will have to retune your car to make it run its best, and by this time it shoud not be a big problem at all to retune.

I may be wrong with my basic explanation, if I am, Im sure I will get corrected here. The guys here never have a problem calling me out and putting me down. GL with your car bro!

You need to ask yourself what your ultimate goal with the car is. Do you plan on staying n/a, going turbo, s/ced, spray. Also what other bolts on's have you done if any. I would do full exhaust/intake before I cammed my car. If you plan on staying n/a then go with a comp cam, but if you plan on s/cing the car, turbo, or spraying the car then it would benefit you now to go with a turbo, blower, or nitrous cam.

I've done full exhaust and intake. I plan on either turbo-ing or supercharging it, but not for years. This is my first car, and I'm keeping it as a project car, really. I plan on getting a nice cheap car thats good on gas at some point to drive around, and just keep building this thing up for years. Thanks for the info, everyone.
