it's on the dyno... true enough. the shop was about to start doing the part throttle tuning when I walked underneath it and noticed that my rear O2's were plugged in. That's odd since I don't use them and my wideband and a plug normally inhabit their holes. Reached up and found the pigtails for the fronts, an hour of cussing and a pint of blood later and the o2 extenders were plugged in. It's getting a 3rd o2 bung installed now so they can put my wideband back on and then they'll start doing the WOT pulls. Looking like a pickup late late today or sometime tomorrow.

It's actually pretty quiet the way I have the exhaust set up. Lots quieter than I thought it would be. Still has a MIGHTY deep rumble to it that you know just plain ol' can't be a 4.6 and when you get on it it's about as loud as I think I'm ready to accept.

On my old shitty tune with the new intake it idles like a dream and doesn't stall with the heater/ac on like it used to with the plates. I knew those damned things were ******* up my tuning. Check out my 54stangs.com site for updated pics ... they're coming up pretty regularly lately.

The Mustang Depot, Palmyrta dr., Riverside CA. They have an ebay store, search for "6.658 rod" and you'll find them.

First results off the dyno were not making me happy. Something in the tune definitely wasn't right. Going back in a couple hours to do a few more tune and run sessions.

http://www.54stangs.com/ or www.squarerootofone.com , they're the same site.

Default dyno results

Where was that section that was nothing but 5.4 dyno results. I wanna look at a torque curve to help me decide on a torque converter. Anybody have any KNOWN input/advice on a 4R70W torque converter?? Thanks

If you haven't already done it, try gaskets with plenty of RTV. I did sarcastically say a while back they you could have them welded onto the manifold, but that's a bit extreme.

on mine i had only rtv between the adapter and head, and a ford intake gasket between the adapter and intake. worked fine.

300rwhp/325tq on that pull, still working on the tune. Something isn't right. The curves are really fat though and the tune is safe.

Thats getting there, and hopefully some more to go, but I'm starting to wonder how far it will go with the cams you've got in it. PI heads are overly stong on the exhaust as is, a 5.4 is more intake challenged than a 4.6, and now you've got kickass longtubes increasing the exhaust flow even more. I'd like to see a combo like yours with the Hitech Stage II or Stage III cams in it, maybe even one biased just a little more towards the intake but thats the best shelf fit I see....

Check it out guys, I have a 97' GT w/ a 03' 5.4l DOHC Triton. I don't know what the motor came out of though. I have been doing some research and ain't the Navagator and the Lighting the only two rides with the dohc? What is the 2v,3v,and 4v about? I see it mentioned quite often when refering to the motor.
I'm not completly lost in this swap but I am out in left field about some things. I just bought the 5.4l intake manifold (I know it's big) b/c oblesley the 4.6l would not fit. Now I have to get the fuel rail and injectors for it. I found a salvage that has it all, ($100) but I was wondering when they go on will everything equal out like the fule pump and ect.? After the fule situation is taken care of what major issues will I be running in to? I was wondering about the sensors, from what I hear it just gonna invole some extending. Is that true?
Oh and one more thing is their any way to tell exactly what kind of motor I have? I found a number stamped on top of the block and called Ford and they couldn't find anything on it. Actually the guy I was taking to was a D*#!
ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRICATED

Don't take this wrong, but its very weird to believe you're *** deep in an engine swap of that magnitude without knowing what 2v, 3v, and 4v are, and that Lightnings never came with anything but a 5.4 2v. Just a perplexing combo..... Anyway, 2, 3, and 4 refer to the number of valves per cylinder. The 2v has one intake and one exhaust valve, 3v has two intake and one exhaust valve, and 4v (or DOHC) has two intake valves and two exhaust valves. 2v and 3v have one cam per bank (single overhead cam or SOHC), 4v has two cams per bank (double overhead cam or DOHC). If you have a DOHC 5.4 it came from a Lincoln Navigator, only vehicle to ever use it. I would consider using the lower intake and fabbing a box upper with a side mount throttle body, Karkraft has/had a carb box that I thought could be modified for fuel injection use, but I don't see it on their website or I would link to it...

final numbers came out a disappointing 300/332 for the average of the best 3 runs. Those numbers were initially bumming me out until I got back in and was quickly reacquainted with the phrase "average torque production" which was quite high. It's; no joke, a LOT snappier than it was. tq is over 300 to the wheels from 2200 - 5200. Nonetheless, I think I was jipped on the heads... they had some obvious porting and big ferrea valves but they turned out to not deliver. It should have made 30-40hp more than that. I'm going to see what I can find a set of heads for... maybe a set of TF's.

In any case, all that crap has to wait. I have to get the ****** smogged.

EDIT: How do I assume it's the heads... cmon' used heads... corral.... never know, so really I'm not sure but I can be 100% certain. At the same time as the heads I'll be thinking about some HiTech cams. Something stage 2-ish.

Anyone near you that can do a bench flow test on those heads? That might shed some light on the situation..

I kind of figured those heads were suspect when you only made 280 rwhp on your first attempt. A good set of ported heads (or even the TF) ones should have you in the 300's easily before the exhaust work. I also think the 1.75" primaries are hurting your power numbers. You probably would have been better off with the 1.625, but that is just my opinion from similar tests Ive seen. Have you scanned in your dyno sheet yet?

R3D, if you need someone to get you smogged, you can try the guy I went through a year and a half ago or so. He's on cafords.com and has a friend who owns a smog shop or soemthing in Concord. I can get you his username and you can see if he's still doing that stuff. I need to get mine smogged in August so hopefully he's still around to help. I think I paid like $200 and never had to take the car in.

not scanned yet... here's the numbers from the other testing that's been done (these are all off the same dyno spread apart by a few days-weeks):

5.4 + adapter plates + MODDED HPS 4.6 intake + shorty headers + my old tune = 271/323
5.4 + HPS 5.4 intake + shorty headers + minor tune fix (AF was way rich on the old tune) = 281/333
5.4 + HPS 5.4 intake + longtube headers + full new tune = 300/332

The rest of the exhaust is still a bit of a cork. I have cats on it from my bassani x pipe (don't need a 1000 buck ticket) and 2.5" pipes all the way back. I could put 3" cats and pipes on it and see if those help as well and maybe some electric exhaust cutouts.

Flow testing the heads requires pulling them off the car. If I do that I'll just replace them. Not going to do 3v though, so it's either TFS heads or none at all.

Those dont sound too bad... I'm real surprised to see the peak torque didnt really increase... did it just shift the point higher in the RPMs? Where are you making peak power now? My guess is you are still below 6k RPM for peak... which comes to the point of whether all the forged internals to handle the extra RPM was really necessary.

Once I get the car back on the road for the spring, I plan to revisit the dyno to get myself an after curve with the new 5.4 HPS intake, 75mm TB, C&L elbow, CAI, and a better tune.

the tq curve is wider by a good bit. Peak tq didn't grow but it makes a a lot more of it above 4000rpm now. All in all it was a good 200-500rpm shift to the right. I had originally planned on eventually doing a 4v upgrade and power adders which necessitated the forged goodies.

I still have thoughts of a two stage nitrous kit... and even some of the parts.
