if you have a pull-a-part local to you or a similar yard you can go in and pull your own

We have a local pick-n-pull. I have had 3 back surgeries and cannot pull spark plugs without feeling pain. Besides they don't have one! I can wait. Car is still running well, just a weak cylinder. Would like to do a motor as cash allows so when I need one it is ready to go. It is the torque of the 5.4 that intrigues me!

all you need is the flexplate from an automatic mach1 or a marauder IIRC.

Actually, no... those cars used the cast crank with 6-bolts. The 5.4 uses an 8-bolt crank IIRC. You need an 8-bolt flexplate. You should still be able to find one relatively easy.

I'd rather spend 800 more on a MMR 5.4 shortblock... but that's just me...

Where are you, I have a complete one in my garage on a stand for $600? I'm on the north side of Baltimore close to PA line?

I am located near Syracuse, NY which is about 6-7 hours from you. I got my SVO intake from a little, well not little as I had never seen traffic like that, just west of D.C. That was an 8 hour drive. I need to get a flexplate before I get a motor though your price seems fair, what condition? I plan on a rebuild but would not want one with a spun rod or main bearing. I had a fellow member offer me a flexplate for the cost of shipping but he deleted the post and has not yet responded to my question as to why yet? He said he had 3 of them and I could have one for the shipping costs.
The Cobra's never had automatics and the mach 1's that did come with automatics had 6-bolt cast cranks like the GT's so it seems the vehicles that had the 5.4's with automtics are the best place to find an 8-bolt flexplate. One of the guys here sent me a PM with a couple of links but the first webtv would not access and I have yet to try the others.
Once I have a flexplate I can proceed as I have decided that a 5.4 is the way I want to go as my original intentions were to have the Stang as an interstate cruiser. With a 5.4 the 4.10's could go and the 3.27's be reinstalled. I have a great 10" Dirty dog converter with a 3300rpm stall that would have even a higher stall with the 5.4 so that would help the 3.27's get it going! The tune locks it at part throttle in 2nd gear and at WOT 1 second after the shift and that tune dropped .2 from my 1/4 mile time. I would build the 5.4 with higher compression, say 10:1 or even 11:1 for power & torque. Hitech Motorsports tunes their cars with 87 octane with 23* total timing and gets 45whp from their stage 2 cams with that tune and headers. Amazing power as that is on a stock head, intake and even TB motor. One guy got 300+WTQ frokm 3300-5000+rpm. Imagine what a 5.4 would do? Could get interesting! Want to stay NA and 5.4 sounds like the way to go. Let me know what you have in a PM or here and if you have an 8-bolt flexplate also? THX! Mark

Does anyone know the height the adapters add to the 5.4 motor? I read the 5.4 sits 1" taller and then whatever the adapters add and I would like to keep my SVO intake? I can measure the existing distance wikth the SVO so I would know that. If I had to sell the SVO I could get a good amount as it has the coolant mod done to it and it has the Bullit rails needed to adapt it to the PI heads.

Too much timing or too lean. If you have a tuner back the timing in the rpm range it is surging. Is it idling OK, so you know there aren't ant vacuum leaks? Likely the timing though as I have had that myself before.

8-bolt means 8-bolt crank and even the Mach 1's with the automatics did noit have an 8-bolt crank!

The '99 and '00 Windsor built 4.6 engines used an 8-bolt cast crank. That is what my 4.6 had.

This is very encouraging even though the plates are not a big ticket item but would be one down. How can I prove this in my car without pulling the tranny? I have a '99 Windsor.
If this is a fact and ALL have the 8-bolt crank it should be documented somewhere. Can anyone find a link about this?

What I need is the distance/thickness of the adapter plates so I will know if the SVO intake I have will fit under the stock hood? Professional Products sells adapters fr $199. through RPM, both companies with spotty reps and MMR has cast plates for $279.
I also heard that the 5.4 is an inch taller besides, true?
I can set a soft object on the intake and see what amount of room I have now. Anyone have either of these plates and can tell me the height they add? THX! Exciting. Hope to keep up with the import V6 cars! Sad but true!

No one knows the thickness of the intake plates? OK. I don't thin k the SVO would be a good choice anyways. What about the 5.4 nd it's slow piston speed, slower than the 4.6 so revs are worse and filling the cylinders. What are you guys reving yours to who have the 5.4 done and in the car, what mods and cam specs? THX, getting closer!

Guys how about the brands of adapter plates with those thicknesses? I have seen Professional Products(machined) and the cast brand whoose name I have forgotten. The Pro's are $199. and the others were $279. Also what manifolds are you using, stock PI intakes?

I also want to make a possible correction on the piston speed of the 5.4 compared to the 4.6 as the 5.4 may have faster speeds but I need to get this data confirmed. If I build this motor I want to be sure I am getting the ciorrect cams that will enhance the motor's rpm range and that is another factor thT WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW, WHAT CAMS YOU ARE USING AND WHAT YOU ARE REVING THE MOTOR TO. Sorry for the caps!

I have access to a Teksid 4v motor but don't think that is the way to go. Maybe to sell and help finance the 5.4 project.
So I have the 8-bolt since I have a '99 Windsor so getting the adapter plates resolved is next as all there is after that is changing over the exhaust manifolds and modifying the 4.6 pan before it is transferrred to the 5.4, correct?

I have been thinking about the build and ebay has kits for the rotating assembly(Was thinking 10.4:1 compression) that are 2lbs. lighter than stock, that is a lot and should help rev the motor quicker, I have a 3400rpm converter and for cams considering Hitech stage 2's. Goal is 300+whp and 350+wtq, should be easy to hit.THX!

5.4 has higher piston speed @ a given rpm, each stroke the 5.4 pistons cover 4.1" distance compared to the 4.6s 3.55"

As far as my knowledge goes Correct me If I'm wrong and detailed please, but was Ford going through the change of 6 to 8 bolt crankshafts in the middle of the year of '99 for Mustangs. I beleive you could get a 6 bolt crank with a '99 and a '00, though it was hit and miss and no car part # idetification could tell you if your crank is 6 or 8 bolt. Now after '00 ALL Mustangs came with 8 bolt cranks. I'm for sure that ALL modulars came with 8 bolts in '01-up. Please correct me someone! And in detials.
