Talking Begginner Advice

Hello forum,
Last thursday I turned in my 1999 cougar v6 and bought a 2002 Mustang GT loaded. As far as I can tell the thing is totally stock. Its Tourqy but lacks the Horsepower I think it should have. I need some 'Direction' if you will. I need you experienced mustang owners out there to turn my car into something special. But keep in mind I need it to drive to work everyday. I live in the North East, so snow is a problem as well. Since last thursdayit has snowed straight through. The first couple days i was driving on the z rated tires; and no weight in the back end; since then I put about 240 lbs of sand in the trunk and today I just got some sweet blizzak 15's and black steel rims from tirerack. I figure I could get about 6000 saved by July for parts or whatever. besides it will take me that long to learn how to drive it to get the most out of it.

So, my question to you forum; What should I do first knowing that this is the fastest car I have ever owned.

2002 Mustang GT, bullitt rims, all leather, 4.6 L V8

Exhaust is the typical starting point. Get yourself a catback of choice, or if you want to keep the spending down on the exhaust, just get some mufflers. Then a mid pipe and if you wanted to keep going, some LT's or shorties if you dont want as much of a hastle.. Gears and sticky tires are the next big mod, 4.10's if your not going with a blower or n2o anytime soon and 3.73's if you are definitly getting a power adder. If you are staying N/A you can go many ways from here, but this would be a good place to throw in a blower if you are planning that route. The springs, shifter, and little things like should also be thrown in where they fit as well. ALso probably wanna swap the filter, but save your money and dont bother with the whole CAI. That sounds like a good start, lemme know what you think and we would really need to know exactly where you wanna go with the car to answer any better than that. Any 1/4mile time you wanna hit, or maybe a hp goal?

Im not too particular about 1/4 mile times, or top end. I would like to add a super charger and get horsepower above 350 though. Looks are irrelevant to me as well. I dont care about spoilers and tinted windows, and ground effect kits. Not my cup of tea. I just want something that performs above average in all catagories, and most of all, I want kick *** handling. Oh, and when I pull up next to a tricked out Rice burner. I want to smoke it so bad the driver questions his nationality.

lol, k, well a blower is gonna be quite expensive though, so if you can afford that, get it asap. once that is done, the rest is easy. Not many ricers you will run into that will be able to beat even a stock mustang + blower, so the rest is just to your preference. To be honest though, it sounds like you may be satisfied with a bolt on car. You get your gears, exhuast, basic suspension, and if you want to add a good amount of power you could do cams and/nitrous down the road. I'd do alot more reading before you start diggin into this. Check out stangnet.com and modulardepot.com as well, they are great sites to check out once in a while too, they have some very smart stangers over there, i learned everything i know from those two sites and a little wrenchtime

stick to vortech, procharger, paxton, and kenne bell. These are the top dogs in the modular world and are proven and reliable. modulardepot has a mongoose kit that is an awesome deal for a whole kit package, they have done hundreds of 4.6L's and they are only getting better. I'd call them up once you start getting money together, they have helped me plan out my entire setup and walked me through each step i've gone through so far. Choosing from those 4 brands right there is a tough call though, you will be happy with all of them, but you will again need to read up on each one before deciding to make a good choice. Dont just take someones word on it, especially on a big purchase like that. My suggestion is always read up on what you plan on buying a ton before you buy it.

I did not notice if you had a 5 speed or automatic.
If you don't go to the track then you really don't need a blower.
Do gears, exhaust, pullies and a SCT tune.
Get a good X pipe and catback, Steeda pullies, K & N drop in air filter and the tune. That should get you 30-35 hp.
As far as the handling goes, the better it handles the worse it rides. You have to decide how far you want to take it. I did Steeda sport springs and Maximum Motorsports sub frame connectors and that improved cornering and got rid of some of the body roll. Put in 4.10's for gears. With these mod's and sticky tires your car would run low 13's at the track. That is about what a stock WRX STI or Evo will run and faster than a SRT Neon. You will have a fast car that hadles well and It won't break the bank. If you want to go faster you can do cams and long tubes and pick up another 30 - 40 hp.
If your car is a 5 speed get a Tri-ax shifter if it's an automatic get a high stall speed converter and a tranny cooler.

Honestly....I would get a Kenne Bell 9psi intercooled supercharger and full exhaust. You will have 375rwhp with a very safe tune. Your intake MAF etc is all capable of supporting this kind of power. The KB will come with all neccesary upgrades (injectors, chip, hardware etc.) I have went the N/A route..and while its fun...if your car is a daily driver just put on the S/Cer a conservative tune and call it DONE! You can get 20+mpg, whoop pretty much anything you run across and still have stock quality driveability.

Just supercharge it since you have a good amount of cash. Whatever is left over exahust and gears etc. Supercharger is going to give you the most HP and HP will keep climbing when you keep adding to it. The most important thing is to have it tunned by someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks everyone, I like the idea of a supercharger adding more miles per gallon. Gas is not cheap in NY. Will the supercharger and all its accessories throw an engine censore ? Cus if my car throws a warning light it fails inspection... No matter how much money I give the mechanic.

No and no. The blower will not add to your milage. In fact, when you use boost it will decrease. But if you stay below 3k rpms (out of boost) you will maintain your current milage, which should be 16-20.. Second, no light will come on. Blowers are perfectly legal.
