Default Gearing

I have read in many places that changing the rear end gear is a definite mod for performance. I have 355 in mine now. What difference would I see switching to 373? Would I be better served going to 410? I can't imagine taking off any faster than I do now, but if I could I'm all for it. Any advice is much appreciated.

You would hardly notice anything different going with the 3.73's. With the 4.10's, you'll notice a decent improvement in acceleration from what you have

^ What he said.

I went with 4.10's in mine and I had 3.31's in before. I was scared at first to put a steep gear into my car, but I am so glad I did. I would have been incredibly disappointed if I went with 3.73's. 4.10's won't make you crack a walnut with your ***, but they will definitely put you in your seat if you stomp it.

Basically, I say the hell with anything that isn't a 4.10 for a daily driven street car. Some will tell you 4.10 if it's an auto, 3.73 if it's a manual, 4.10 in the city, 3.73 on the highway, blah blah blah. You will be fine in both city and highway with 4.10's. I can cruise 70-80 on the highway and still be under 3,000 RPM's.

Enough of this talk. Just get the damn 4.10's and don't ask any more questions about the gears. You will thank us later.

If you have an auto I would say move up to the 4.10s but if you have a manuel I would say keep what you have unless you want a very small increase

If you are planning on staying N/A, go with 4.10's or even 4.30's with the taller tire of the 05+ over the new edge. If you are planning on ever going with a supercharger or turbo, stay with the 3.55's.

Another gear thread? Shouldn't we just sticky one of them and call it good. All noobs can get their questions answered there instead of creating a new thread every time.

I can't even imagine how awesome that'd be in the quarter-mile. If gas prices stay low and keep going down someone might do it.

Some of the 4v guys who are staying n/a run 4.56 gears in their cars and it works great for them. Us 2v guys don't need that much gear.

I'm curious about that too. Might be a fun mod, but wouldn't I lose a lot on mileage? I'm going to be doing a lot of Highway driving starting in January, so probably not a smart idea huh?

So I decided to go with 4.10 (can't wait till install Tuesday). I have the stock Pirelli Pzero nero 17's now. How are they gonna do as far as not losing traction so easily with the new gear?

good choice. FWIW, I'm running 3.55's and think they're more than enough for your average joe. That means you'll definitely be happier with 4.10's.

I think it's Jim Campisano editor(?) of MM&FF who has a Red 96-98 Cobra that he runs 4:88 gears in and ran a second faster on a road course than he did in a Ford GT. It was in an atricle a long time ago.

Well, my 4.10's are in. Rainy out though, can't really "test" it. 55 miles per hour 2,000 rpm. Not bad. Can anyone recommend a good 17 inch tire that won't break traction as easily on dry pavement?

And by the way, I got the gears and TB installed for $293. Crowell Ford in South Boston, VA. Mechanic's name is Eugene. Highly recommend him.
