Default Tuner question!

I'm looking at getting 4.10's in soon. I hear you have to also get a good tune when you get then installed. Bad thing is....i know JACK CRAP about tuners and chips. Before i spend a good $500 can anyone tell me what it really does and why i need it? Also i see people always talking about sending it in and getting a new tune put in or something like that. How do i go about knowing what i need to get done to it. thanks

The basic program is yes and no questions, so you really cant mess that up.

Diablo Sport Tuner:
Dual timing adjustment points (2000-4000 RPM / 4000-7000 RPM)
Timing table (+10% / -40%)
Dual fuel adjustment points (2000-4000 RPM / 4000-7000 RPM)
Fuel table (+40% / -15%)
Idle (+/- 20%)
On/Off switch for Traction Control
Raise Speed Limiter
Rev Limiter
Re-Calibrate Speedometer for Gear and Tire Size Changes
WOT Shift Pressure
Part throttle shift firmness
RPM Shift Points
Torque Modulation (for better shift feel)
Cooling Fan ON/OFF Temperatures
Rear Oxygen sensor disable (use for off-road vehicles only)
Disable EGR (use for off-road vehicles only)
All of these parameters can be adjusted on the DiabloSport tune and/or the factory tune
Diagnostics and Live Data Logging

SCT Excalibrator
I have no experiance with the Xcal so I am not sure how it works but I would assume you just plug it in and it does the rest.
Increases Horsepower,
Torque,
Gas Mileage & Throttle Reponse
Pre-Programmed with up to 3 Custom Calibrations specifically for your vehicle
Retains Factory Calibration for easy restoration back to the stock calibration
Easy installation. No tools necessary
Quicktune 2005 Custom Tuning included
(optional programming cable required, sold separately)
Easy to use push button & LED interface
Quickly Flashes PCM via OBD-II diagnostic port

If you have a 5 speed, a gear swap does not require a tune, you just need to get your speedo calibrated. Actually, with an auto you don't need one either, it's just that you MUST get the speedo calibrated and a tuner will make the car shift better. BTW, a tuner can be used to calibrate the speedo, but there are other, cheaper devices that can do that too, but that is all that they do.

The main goal for most people with a tuner/chip on a near stock car is to add a few hp by increasing timing so you can run high octane fuel.

Read this thread. Might help you out.
