Default 05/06 - still have driveterrain loss with autos?

A guy I work with has a nice 2006 Faleen (GT with Saleen body kit) and I've tried to get him to race since he's got it, but he says "you have mods... mines an auto blah blah blah." Well now he said that he doesn't lose HP because it's an auto like the previous autos. I haven't really looked into the new cars so I have no clue if this is right or not. He's saying it has the same amount of HP to the wheels as a manual mustang. Anyone know if this is right?

ps.. I'm helping him mod his car, do CAI have almost no effect on the 06's just like on the 99-04s?

sorry i dont know the answer to most of your questions but a very good friend of mine is modding out his 06 as well. skip the cai, get a k&n filter, and definitely get him some upper and lower adjustable control arms quick. those car have a lot of power but a hell of a time getting it to the ground. with drag radials his car would be quick. my friend ran a 13.45 less than 2 weeks after buying his car with only lower control arms. still spun a lot but not nearly as much as he did without them.

I don't think my friend is very interested in taking it to the track. He's more like one of those people who wants a fast car, doesn't care what it is, and only races on the street. He asked me to find him some cheap mods.. I just told him if he wants good power he's gonna have to spend the money, so I priced him some SLP LT's and an SLP X-pipe He keeps saying he wants to try to wreck his 06 when the new Challenger comes out so he could get it instead /shakeshead

lol about the challenger, my friend mostly rides on the street as well. the lower control arms will help him on the street and /or track with traction. the new mustangs have pretty bad wheel hop and horrible traction. if he just wants bragging rights of high hp then yeah skip it but you will eat him alive out of the hole.

he said his car also has all those safety features that keep him from burning out, I'm sure a tune fixes all that though. but yeah, I think he just wants bragging rights. He was going on yesterday about how he thinks there's something wrong with his mom's corvette because it's "slow" and his GT is faster than it.. I had to tell him it only has an LS1 engine in it and it's an auto.. it's not fast as ***** like they think it should be lol

The 05's work well with CIA's when coupled with a tuner. They are netting 25 rwhp.

Your "friend" is a moron. Sorry, he's stupid, dumb, slightly criminal and short sighted (did I miss anything). Here's some facts.

EVERY motor loses HP through the drive train. They don't all lose the same amount but with an automatic tranny in the mix you can safely bet on a 20% loss as a minimum. manual trannies don't rely on hydraulic pressure to maintain output shaft motion. they do still take power to run but a lot less. 15% is the commonly accepted figure for driveline losses to manual trannies. That figure may be higher or lower for either kind of tranny depending on how it's implemented.

HP is required to overcome the valvesprings, the viscosity of the oil, the resistance of air to being pulled on and pushed out and compressed and expanded and fuel pumped, and all that. When you get to driveline, the setups are required to be very heavy duty, and reliant on big metal gears. Spinning those takes power too.

Tell your friend to pony up to an automatic tranny with a torque converter attached and have him spin the torque converter until the output shaft is spinning at say... 1000rpm. When he gets tired and wants to stop, tell him that he can't be tired because autos don't take any power to run. Then hit him in the head with a tack hammer and call him a moron.

All in all, you should expect that your fuel system is providing enough gas to make 30-35% more power than you see at the ground and that all that power you don't see is USED UP by the process of just running. Tell your friend to take a couple anti-stupid classes at his local community college. I'd recommend basic math, chemistry and physics.

BTW, csledd, you'd win all else being even. His 06 may make 270 at the wheels bone stock but it also weighs a bit more than your 03. The 05+ cars do have the worst wheel hop I've seen in a long time. I think it's easy enough to fix with better springs, bushings and more sturdy control arms.

thanks redneck.. I was telling him last night how the hell does it not lose more power than a manual when the car is still having to do all that work to shift gears. another friend started telling me he read something about newer cars not loosing as much because of something, he didn't really remember. oh well. yeah i'd really like to race him just to see what the new mustangs have. I messed around with one when I was stock and it got me pretty good.. he doesn't wanna race though, I dunno why.

how much do those cars weigh in at anyways?

I can think of one reason.

He doesn't know how to handle his car, and is afraid to lose to you?
