Default Manual Vs Auto?

Ok so I just moved from cali to utah and i pretty much got screwed over with car prices in utah. Cars here mostly mustangs are way over priced and im having a hard time finding a manual although i can find autos all day. My problem is i want to race (drag) and i heard auto mustangs dont shift very well is this true, and if not are autos good or should i wait for a stick.

i dunno who you were talking to but they dont know much about mustangs....

it is whatever you preffer. The autos have a litttle bit more drivetrain loss, but you dont have to worry about missing a gear. a lot ofpeople who are really into the drag racing swear bu auto
that plus you can buy an XCAL 2 or some sort of handheld tuner and firm up the shifts, and adjust several other peramaters and that will help you out a bit.

it would be better to do a j mod or buy a valve body. that will give you some hard shifts. when i had a diablo hand held i didnt get any change in performance i track tested it. i went faster stock

there is nothing wrong with a auto. mine was fine till it started shifting late on WOT 1/4 mile drags.

My auto shifted fine stock, but with the programmer it will shift at 5250-5100rpm and hard, sometimes too hard and break the tires loose. I like driving and racing stick but for a daily driver I'd want nothing other than my auto. I've seen alot of Cobra owners change thier six speed to automatics.

No I haven't and wouldn't want to. Valve float, and all kinds of other problems like a blown engine hang around 7000 rpm, plus I think peak HP is around 5200 rpm. I have the rev limiter set to 5500. Do you know anybody that has met 7000 rpm with a v6 mustang?

Yeah i havent reached it. the highest i ever got was 6250rpm and before my chip it only went to 5200rpm. So i think that there is no way to get that high, to much stress. no i dont know anyone that has. but could a V8 so it with ease?

manual for racing...

more control (shifting etc)
and they don't lose as much power to the wheels

stock for stock that is...

A c4 or similar tranny are the best racing trannys

Who moves from Cali to Utah?? Weird. Anyway, I think Auto's are more consistent, but they do soak up some power compared to 5 speeds. If you master shifting with a 5 speed you'll be fine.....I say go for a 5 speed if you can find one.

they both have their ups and downs. I'd never have anything but a manual but thats personal preference. If you want to seriously do some drag racing then get an auto. Missed shifts can be BAD and autos never miss a shift.

And I may be moving to Idaho from California. I'm just sick of this damned state. I can make 6 figures in ID or I can make it here in Cali... Idaho lets those dollars go further and I can own a few houses there. We'll see if I get the job.

Very true, if you can make the same money out of this state you'll be doing VERY well for yourself.....I've thought about moving, but then the winter hits and then I realize why I like it here! ha ha.....but the cost of living in Cali is getting pretty out of hand.

yeah he has a point though i was near carmel(that beach sucks) but i did the surfing thing but we bought a pretty big company out here and the cost of living is dirt cheap, the culture change was a little weird though, but yeah cali is a beautiful state and you do lose the ocean.

i've had a 5 speed truck sense ive been driving and ive never stalled it or misshifted but when theres money involved anything can happen. but speaking of money for the guys out there what race for money what are you against, do you need to supe your car up to race for money?

I'm running a auto v6.. when i race i start out in first.. then second, then drive.. i get higher rpms that way.. shifting first to second i do tend to break traction but its not too bad.. and i've raced a modded v6 manual.. lost to him by a car.. (wasn't too much done.)

Automatic is great for every day driving..especially in california.. here in bakersfield i head down to los angeles ... driving a manual in that sort of traffic is hell.

I would prefer a manual for racing, but, my automatic isn't too bad, i can still whip the hell out of a rice burner any day. ;p
