Default Taking a big step

So I have been with my girlfriend for almost 5 years now and we have been talking about marriage for awhile now. Just the other day I went with her mother to look at diamonds and rings and such. I put the order in for the ring yesterday and get to pick it up tomorrow. I'm hopefully going to be talking with her father tonight and possibly proposing tomorrow night. I'm a little nervous, but overall feel pretty good. It's something I definitely want. Anyways, wish me luck and if you got some advice, I'm open to hear it.

I think thats a great move getting approval from dad first especially if she's a daddy's girl. Good luck bro hope everything goes well for ya.

Awesome.

Curious where you ordered from, and why you chose them ?

Thanks silverstang. As far as the ring goes. I went with my gfs mom to her jeweler and looked at a few loose diamonds. I chose a 1.2 carat diamond and it will be set in a 14ct white gold solitaire setting. The jeweler was pretty cool, he was very knowledgable and educated me on things. He actually talks people out of buying super expensive diamonds if you can't tell the difference between a little lower quality diamond then a better quality one. I looked at several diamonds, some looked better on paper than others, but I could not see a difference in any of them. They are rated under 10x magnification anyways. I don't know if your in Cali 2eighty1, but the place is in Milpitas

Not in cali, although I am on the west coast.

I was just curious, as I run an online jewelry store that has a few local branches as well. I just like to hear why people shoped where they did.

Oh ok, thats cool man. Yeah I looked at a few places and my dad had checked with his jeweler. My dad's jeweler would have gotten me roughly the same quality diamond but for like $1500 more. I got a good deal and I know my gfs mom really trusts him. Her last purchase from him was an upgrade to her wedding ring, 3 carat diamond. Thing is freakin huge.

Congrats man! Welcome to the engaged club. I proposed to my lady back in August. It's a great move to talk to her dad. I did the same thing and I think it shows a great deal of respect. Good move.

Ok, now for some advice.....whenever she asks you questions about the wedding plan like the colors, location ect.....just go a long with whatever she wants. It will make your life a lot easier. ha ha ha....oh and check out the Dunsmuir Estate in Oakland, that's where we are getting married....it's super sweet. http://www.dunsmuir.org/

What store in Milpitas did you get her ring.....I may have went to the same store. ha ha

the secret to a happy marriage is, there's no secret. Be honest, caring and helpful but don't be a puss. Most chicks can dig with that.

I got married at the pleasanton courthouse. 50 bucks and 30 minutes later we bounced off to tahoe.

Thanks for the advice guys. No puss here R3d. jjgiants, as far as the ring goes, I got it at Anthony John Jewelers. It's a small shop right off of Montague Expressway and McCarthy Blvd. Oh, I've already learned to just say yeah thats cool and stuff. The only thing I care about is the food, music, and alcohol. The wedding will probably be fairly large. I have a big family and then with friends and what not. Anyways, if things go as planned, I should be engaged by tomorrow night. I'm a little nervous cause I think I'm meeting her dad for breakfast tomorrow morning. He knows its coming, but I just wanna get this done and over with.

you'll be ok man. I was pretty nervous as well, but it will be a happy thing and so that makes it much easier....unless he hates you! ha ha ha...which I'm sure he doesn't.

I hear ya with just wanting a say in the food, music and booze. That's pretty much all I've had a hand in. You know, if any of you want to make good money, start some kind of business having to do with weddings. You mention it's for a wedding and the price of everything gets jacked up....our wedding is going to have a little over 200 people and her poor parents are forking out a little over 30G's for the damn thing....just freaking rediculous if you ask me. I'd rather have a small wedding and take the cash for house upgrades or something. ha ha ha But again, I just kept my mouth shut and smiled! ha ha....I've learned to pick my battles.

Yup my gf at one time wanted to be a wedding coordinator. Not sure if she stills does or not, but I have seen all the shows and everything. My tiVo is full of them. I wouldn't mind a small destination wedding in Hawaii or something, but whatever her parents want to pay for, then I'm all for it. 200 people is a pretty damn big wedding. It should be one big fun party though. When are you getting married?

200 people is way too big for my taste, but she has a large Italian family that are all pretty much local so it's hard. October 20th is the big day.

So does your lady have any idea your about to pop the question? Do you have somewhere special lined up to ask her?

wow, only 6 months away. I bet it gets here super fast. Well she knows its coming at some point. She keeps asking me when I keep telling her be patient it will be soon. Finally last night she found out their really good family friends son is going to propose to his girlfriend soon and she kinda got all upset. She wouldn't talk to me much last night, and I kind of played it off that it will be at least another month. I was going to possibly set up some kind of pinic at her work without her knowing and such, but now I'm not sure. I might just take her out to dinner tomorrow and pop the question there because I don't think she can wait much longer and it will catch her off guard.

ha ha ha....I went through the same thing dude....I was getting a little heat as well, but kept pushing it back and then a couple of her friends that had only been dating their boyfriends for a couple of years got engaged and that's when the she started getting upset. It's so funny how men and women are so different when it comes to this stuff.

Just an idea, but you could always take her to the place of your first date! A picnic would be a pretty sweet thing. That's a good idea

It's weird how life will work out for you.. I asked my lady to marry me while I was eating a burrito from taco bell. I didn't get her one and she got kinda pissy about it. Then she told me she was preggo and I didn't eat another bite. I asked to marry me and have been very happily married for 15 years to her.. BTW, We had a really nice wedding in a small chapel, with about 60 friends and relatives.. She still has the $300 dollar wedding ring too.. It aint about price of the ring or wedding, Just make sure she's your true soulmate. I got lucky cause I almost married another girl before I met my true love,,

Well, I just had breakfast with her dad and everything went very well. He is cool with everything and very happy. In a few hours I'm picking up the ring and then going out to dinner tonight to pop the question.Yeah 5 years is awhile, but a few of those years we were in college and actually doing a long distance thing. She is definitely the one and things are gonna be pretty damn good.

ha ha, nice work. I'll try not to screw things up. Hopefully now that she will the ring, I can start doing some more modding to the car without her getting all mad.

ha ha ha....yeah, she'll be so happy she won't care if you mod the car. But do it fast before you start getting deep into the wedding plans. ha ha...good luck tonight

Well I did it. Asked her on friday night to marry me. We went to a pretty nice restaurant, popped the question there and things are good. She had no idea it was coming. Went to her parents house afterwards and they were excited. Now I'm ready for the parties and what not.
