Just Put In Cold Air Intake In 3.8 V6. Can Too Much Air Be Bad? Never Had Cold Air Intake Before Just Don't Know.!!!!

noo and they dont work as well as you think lol. It really just has less restrictions and bends adds a few ponys. Colder air=more oxygen molecules which=more power.

Missed that one i guess, but the gains cannot be outragous. This guys thread was about too much cold air though.

 

no such thing as too much cold air, but the bend in the pipe is bad. it causes turbulence which messes up the air fuel ratio. cai is a good mod as long as its not mac. it's not always worth the money it costs though, you wont gain much hp from it. like 95bstallion said, they dont really work as good as you think.

 

But then in the summer when your air is comin outa the engine bay it's maddd hot...it's kinda a give and take,....

 

OK...here is the deal. CAI's do NOT bring in more air, they bring in more oxygen by bringing in cooler air because the air is cooler and therefor more "compressed".

The relationship is boyles law and is Pressure x Volume/Temperature.

As temperature decreases and pressure stays the same, the volume decreases. This means you can squeeze more air (ie oxygen) through thge intake at one time.

Now, do they work? In theory "yes". In reality "yes", but not as good as you think. There is a bigger benefit with cars that have sc's or turbos then running n/a especially because cooler air means you can advance the timing more and cars with blowers love timing.

The problem with CAI is that modern cars work on a closed-loop feedback system. This means that you car has oxygen sensors which provide feedback to the injecotrs. As you bring in more oxygen with a CAI your car will compensate by adding more fuel to maintain the pre-determined air to fuel ratio. On our cars at WOT, they go into open-loop (unless you car is equipped with a FAST system or running a Venom nitrous system). This means that the car adds a pre-determined amount of fuel based on fuel tables and the fuel is NOT corrected for a/f. In these cases, a CAI should make you run a little more lean which should add some power.

On Mustangs, CAI's that bend in the fender well are used a lot, but not generally recomended. They pose problems for the mass air flow meter. You see them a lot on older Mustangs, but those did not employ a MAF. Some drivers report drivability problems with them.

The air is always hotter comming out of thw engine bay. The point of a CAI is that is draw air from outside. In all reality, Mustangs are equipped with a CAI right out of the box.

What I said was in teh summer a straight shot sucks in more air out of the engine bay, where as the bend in the pipe on the MAc lets in air from the fender well a couple degrees cooler...

ANd yes i know unless you do a blow or juice nothing "ADDS" more power to the engine, it just frees up the engines potential power...

 

the cold air intake is a great mod if used with other bolt ons. by itself the CAI is really not worth it

 

you need to plug that hole with the rubber grommet, or it will confuse your maf, because of air coming in behind the maf
