Engine Install Day.....

Engine Install Day.....
Attempted to install my motor today, realized that it had the old Pinto oil pan on it and had to pull it back out to install the new pan. Good news is, I re-read the rules and they allow racing pans and I just happen to have a new Canton waiting to go in. Bad news is, Advance or Auto Zone decided that they don't need to carry oil pan gaskets for 2.3 liter 4cyl motors.
Now I gotta wait till the weekend.

The attitude of the Assistant Mgr at Autozone really roasted my nuts though. I hate ignorant people.

Well, I went in there with the oil pan in hand, told him I needed a gasket for a 1985 Mustang. He then proceeds to ask me if it was before 2/86 or after 2/86 production. Since it was an '85, I think he would have known the answer before making a fool of himself. Now, keep in mind, I already checked online that they had it in stock. My mistake was not walking in there with the part number.
Anyways, he proceeds to tell me that they don't stock that gasket. I asked him to look up a 1979 2.3 since it would be the same that I need. He reluctantly does, knowing that I am right and he is wrong but doesn't want to admit it. He quickly comes back and says "Nope, we don't have that either" So I walk out.
I rush home, get online, do one of those send shopping list to store thingys and let my wife go in there. He doesn't know anything about the program where you can shop at home and have your parts waiting so my wife calls me. I give her the part number to give him and as soon as he recognizes the number, he tells my wife that his store doesn't stock that part. Needless to say, I tell her to get the f out of there and I will call his District Mgr tomorrow ( I know him from a few years ago when I worked there). Kinda sucks that the damn customers know more about auto parts then the employees. Granted, I am ASE Certified in the Parts Specialist field and I would have done everything to find a gasket that would have worked...i.e. different years, models, etc.

I left out that part....he was counting a cash register when I walked in. I waited for about 5 minutes, never budged. Then the phone rang and jumped to get it. Left me waiting. Lady comes in, picks up 2 quarts of oil and proceeds to check out and he jumps to help her and tells me he will be with me in a moment.

Sorry to hear that Mike. Luckily, the Autozone's near me are actually pretty decently stocked with smart people. Andy (Nova on this forum) works at one near me, and I bought a new window motor for the Trans Am and he even knew about how their wiring is messed up on the passenger side causing the motors to burn out prematurely. I was impressed
Good luck getting the motor put in and the dbag at AZ in trouble.

Decent Here
I must say Auto Zone in my area is pretty ok. Service is a lil weak the way they make you wait alot of times but .... hey not much is peferct anymore. I think the reason the AZs in the area are on their chit is cuz I live 20 mins from their main office in Memphis. ( I live in north MS.... too damn much crime and killing going on for my but to live there)
Once I had tranny probs outta my wifes Chevy Lumina. I thought I could start by replacing the tranny fluid filter and put fresh juice in there. At that time I like to get parts from dealers (to hell with cost, I wnted the right part) I went to the local Chevy dealer and told em I needed a gasget for the tranny pan. Got it back home it was the wrong one. Ok well hell, chit happens right? I take it back the swap it out for another one they say is right. I get it back home and THAT is the wrong one also! I had to wait till the next day I took it back and tryed to explain to them the gasget that I needed. I tell them its a '92 3.2 Euro! They look at me like im crazy! I said forget it, got my refund a bailed out. I went to Auto Zone and told them what I needed and they said ok here ya go..... got home and I had the Lumina up in running in less than an hour! They got it right the first time, when the chevy dealership kept dropping the ball

i work at autozone, and have a few friends that do. just like any other parts place, you have to know who to talk to and when. look, i know my ****, and if i dont ill find it out. dont hate autozone as a chain because of a few shitty employees. i work with plenty of useless waste of space, and the other big chains (advanced, a few people at o'reilys) really suck. but there are some good knowledgeable people out there. besides, autozone is a discount chain, so they have to hire cheap help. i dont get paid that well, especially for my qualifications and how good i look on paper, but its a good college job for me.
just learn who can be the most help for you, and develope a good customer relationship with them. i know a few of my customers pretty well, the pariculars of their car and what the ongoing problems they have are. not to mention there are a lot of rules that can be bent in the name of "customer service"

Mike, you get that engine in yet?

It is in, just not running quite yet. I have to re-route the fuel line and pick up some header and intake gaskets. After a few little problems, the motor dropped right in.
