if you want boost, go big. Start with 8.5-9:1 compression. Then don't hesitate but to stuff 12-14lbs in it. If it's built right it'll hold.

I'm doing a 10.5:1 compression motor with ported heads, HPS intake, and a 100 shot of giggle gas. Now that I've finally gotten my pistons the build is moving along again. I just ordered 100 bucks worth of AN fittings last night so I can get rid of all the ugly black hoses under the hood.

r3dn3ck, what type of piston, head gasket tickness, and combustion chamber size are you using to get 10.5:1?

This is based on the following:

Ported heads with swirl damn cut down (w/ stock valves this = 45cc chamber) and flat faced vavles (drops chamber size back down to 41cc, stock valves bump chamber size to 45cc and compression on this combo to 10:1), 4.5cc dish pistons at 3.572 bore, 3.6 bore gasket, deck height .120, gasket compressed .036, stroke 4.165. Using the Virtual Engine Calculator 2005 tool from Challenger Engine Software I come out with 10.5.

EDIT: If you would like your compression estimated, please post up your piston size, heads (including ported or not), and valve choice. I'll be able to get pretty darned close for you.

2nd edit: on 4.6's the deck is .008, but the 5.4 has that extra .1" clearance to the piston tops which makes life easier getting the compression you want.

- r3dn3ck, what will cutting the swirl dam do for the engine in general?

It shrouds the intake valve so getting rid of it helps improve intake flow.

got my ARP main studs and my rod bearings and a crap load of AN fittings. It's getting closer.

On the 4.6 front I spent yesterday finishing up my PCV oil/air separator gen-3 with braided lines and AN fittings. It looks so cool. Now that I've got all the measurements I can make a parts list and see what it actually cost me. Probably upwards of 60 bucks. I also reconnected my rear diff temp guage. It seems odd.. my IRS ran at like 180-220 degrees, my solid axle runs at 250 pretty steadily. Time to get my diff cooler done.

i saw one in the magazines where it took the oil from the diff to the axle tubes and back to keep it cool.

I've got an old system I haven't connected up on this axle yet. Simple Tilton pump, -6 lines, a couple PC case fans and a 12x4 heat exchanger. I need to fab up a plate for it this weekend and then buy a diff cover and connect it up.

Anyone wants a diff cooler system I'll build it for #650 bucks. Bolt on ready.

does the diff really need a cooler that bad? why not run some royal purple in it and leave it alone...

I went and stuck a guage on my old IRS to find out if I needed to put a cooler on or not. Temps on my average drive after 35 miles or so were up over 180deg. After another 20 they topped 200. It would level off at about 220 but that's plenty hot for my taste considering that was street driving. After I blew up my diff housing I replaced it with an iron case from a tbird. I knew the iron would hold more heat and it did, so I made a cooler and brought the temps from over 250 to 180 with a really cheap easy to build setup.

My current 98 cobra axle runs about 150-180 on my commute but when I take it to the races next year I'll definitely need some cooling back there.

CLIFF'S NOTES: most people don't but I drive like a nutcase and that drives my diff temps higher than normally seen on the street. For a race car.. hell yeah you should have one if your track is longer than a rural driveway.

I got another new bit last night. A mach1 chin spoiler. It's going on this afternoon. I've always wanted one but I refused to pay 80 or 100 bucks for the honor... got it last night for 40 bucks hand delivered. I'll take some pics this weekend with it installed.

I know on the old Mustangs you can trim the shock towers to fit a 460 in them (60's) but can this be done on a SN95 if a coil over is to be used?

the 4.6 is as wide as a 460 up top. I don't know about the bottom half but I don't see a reason it wouldn't fit. I know of them having been put into drag race only SN95's so it's definitely possible.

You guys crack me up, I swear I come here daily, like an addict, for my fix of comedy...and tech info of course. I was going over engine possibilities as well and thought of what i'm really wanting out of this, 2v, 3v, 4v, 4.6 or 5.4. I think i'm going to stay on track with the 2v 5.4 for costs and ease, but later would like to match it up with a T-56 6-speed to replace the stock 5-speed. Would this be a good combination and what would be required besides the tranny and mounts, to install it? Would my tach still work with this and is there any issues i'm going to run into with the ECU? I guess I could always just get race tach, but electronically and in regards to mounting is there anything I have to worry about? I'm pretty sure it requires a T-56 specific shifter, and drive shaft. Am I missing anything else? Keep in mind this will be after the 5.4 is installed and i'm likely going to want to build up the rear.

it's not that big a deal. the sensor plugs in the same way. Tach isn't related to tranny, speedo is but that's fixed fairly easily. it mounts right up with the correct crossmember. drive shaft is 1" shorter with t56. t56 shifters are unique to that tranny.

hey all,

im new to this thread but ive been reading it for the past two days. i think its totally awsome what youre doing here. Ive been back and forth between what i want to do with my 00 GT. First i wanted to build it, then i was thinkin about stroking it to 5.0, blower, turbo, nitrous, ive contemplated it all (although i do have a zex wet kit right now

I was talking to my buddy whos gonna be doin a complete build of his 5.0 this winter and he mentioned a 5.4 swap to me. I researched online for a few days and stumbled across this thread and now im addicted and ive finally decided what i want to do to my pony. Im approaching 70k miles this winter and i want to put her up and im looking to do a 5.4 swap. I think for the money and the potential gains this is the ultimate setup...as far as 2v is concerned anyways.

Ive read through every post and even though i know ill get lectured on the minor issues surrounding this, i really really want to go with the lightning setup. I know it has major hood issues but if i can get it dropped 1.5 - 2" with new motor mounts and a k-member i think i could fit it under a 4" cowl.

Even though most of you arent going this direction, does anyone know what other problems arise from doing the lightning setup other than the cosmetic repercussions. i.e. wiring and computer, throttle cables, and the such.

keep up the good works guys.

the only problem you'll have is with your oil pan sitting an inch or two lower to the street. better chance of catching something along the way. you can build a forged motor and pickup a used blower kit cheaper then most lightning motors. but thats just my 2 cents worth...

well ive found a lightning shortblock w/ forged internals and lower intake and s/c for $2500. i can swap my stage 3 p&p PI heads over as well as a lot of misc. parts and accessories...i think a upper intake for the blower will run about 350. So for less than 3 grand i can have a built 5.4 lightning long block basically...to me that seems like a pretty good deal.

save for the minor issues with getting it to fit. and yeah, i suppose dropping it down an inch or more would create problems with the oil pan.

does anyone have a link or know someplace i can go to look at 3,4,5" cowls for the 99-04?

cant really find anything for the 99-04s bigger than 3 1/2...guess ill just get a factory style fiberglass hood and a fiberglass cowl scoop (whatever size i need) and have it cut and bonded on...ooooh, maybe even riveted with a steel hood

or even a 3" cowl hood, with a 2" cowl scoop riveted on top...did somebody say multi-tier cowl?

hmmm...looks like gettin that beast to fit under there wont be too awful hard with a little custom hood work
