If you want stockish sounding cams, try HiTech Stage 2 or stage 3's. The 3's have only a very light chop at idle. The 2's are pretty close to stock sounding to the uninitiated.

To drive it to the tuner once it's put together should be fine as long as you use your stock MAF and injectors. It'll run rough as hell and probably want to die a lot at idle but that's something you can deal with.

As for the tranny... I was pretty rough on mine right after the swap and it's doing just fine. Just like with a 4.6, if you beat the **** out of it it won't last as long.

MMR is the only 1 I can find and it's 2700 bucks. I'd call them and ask about it.

Alternately, try and find another brand or beg and plead with Bob at HPS to make a 3v version of the 5.4L hardball'r. It's just a minor change. He might just be able to pull it off.

Update: think i just blew up my 4.6...I really wanted to finish the 5.4 before I had this happen but looks like im accelerating getting the 5.4 done. I wont be able to get all the parts done but the only things im pretty sure i'll need that i dont have are BIG injectors, a fuel pump to support said injectors, oil pan/pump, and that should be it. still waiting on my intake to come from myillwill
Ill have to install the coils/plenum tb etc etc.

look at the bright side you gave a badass 5.4 ready to be dropped in and make some awesome torque. Thanks redneck for all the help i appreciate it. Is there a way I can beef up my tranny or should I just buy a new one. I have an old c4 sitting around should I get that rebuilt. I was thinking of using 4.56 gears or should i use 4.30 for my 5.4 3 valve.

replied to bigbore via pm... he had more questions. For the record, I don't like anything over a 3.73. It's already traction limited on 3.55's... 4.10's are going to be tire fryers.

1996: Use the oil pan from your 4.6 along with the oil pump and pickup tube if they're still good. LMK... I have a 03 cobra fuel pump you can have for shipping.

GEARS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH TRACTION!! you should select the rear gear ration based on your wants/needs and NOT the "traction it will allow" If you have traction problems, you address tires and suspension, NOT the gears!!!

R3d the PM me and ill paypal for the FP asap.

With my eventual goal of around 5-600 HP the stock oil pump will be ok?

EDIT: R3d one of my buddies is willing to trade me a Walborh 255lph in tank pump for my set of PI cams...is this better/worse than the cobra pump?

Need injector recomindation guys.

Ported heads, nasty cams, hrdballer intake, BBK 78mm tb/plenum, msd coils/plug wires, frpp shorties, o/r h.

Will be fed by either cobra pump or walbro 255lph in tank.

Also should i look into upgrading my fuel rails? Eventually I will be getting a nice kit from somewhere that is complete, but right now I need to finish the dang 5.4 and get it running, so Im only looking to support + some growing space on the injectors. Looking for 400whp..or close

Talking SOUNDS GREAT !!!

Sounds SWEEEEEEEEEET ... bigger bore and longer stroke ... just what we need. Never a replacement for displacement.

I sent him an email with some questions.
I asked him how reliable is it, because of the stroke concern. I told him stroke is already to squared and pistons already going crazy fast. He told me several customers have built a stroke and big bore 5.4 resulting in 6.3 liters and said they have had no problems. I also ask about how high can he rev because I was told I was not going to be able to rev above 5000rpms and he told me If I ever built a 5.4 stroker.lol! and that all his builds had great power above 5000rpms. He some what answered the questions but not as direct as I would like. It sounds real, really cool too. I remembering reading in a f150 forum about the stroker crank I read nothing but good stuff. Well I only read one page. I remember them sayiong they were able to rev up to 5,500 rpms in their trucks I know the mustang could then atleast rev up to 6000rpms.

Ya i'd like to hear ya red thinks..Im sure red has looked this up...im more or less a newb lol.. I just did a basic search and seen this...damn near dropped my jaw. Sounds REALLY good.. BUT.. how much else are you going to have to upgrade to just get it running effectivly. Also to consider..Cost wise.. If your spending this on a crank..i bet its most effective after some GREAT flowing heads and fuel pump, injectors, MAF cams and sooooooooo on lol.. The way I look at it you would have to build around that crank...it just takes it to a whole nother level ya know?
Also is this something that can be put in any 5.4?

Oh my, the fuel mileage!!! 8mpg ??? (possibly)

There's a limit on street tires and street car suspension. You act like these guys cars are all living their lives on the strip. We're talking about street cars here. These guys aren't going to redo their whole suspension and buy R compounds just so their 4.10's and huge tq won't blow the tires off at every gear. Not to mention the fact that you pick gears based on your power band and the power band of the 5.4 is admittedly in the mid-rpm range more than the upper so bigger gears like that are counter productive. You'd do better with 3.55's for most 2v street combos or 3.73 for those with really wild cams or auto's.

Be sure it'll work for your application. I'm not 100% certain it will. Lemme look at the pigtail connectors before you commit cash to it.

without a 3.7 bore it's counterproductive unless you have a bigass truck and want the low end.
With a 3.7 bore it's a 3500 dollar block and a 2500 dollar crank. 6 grand and you haven't even put any ****** parts in it yet. EEEEEK. Work on the bore if you're going to spend the money. There's already more than enough stroke. Even with a 4v I'm not seeing the benefits match the cost outside of a couple very specific truck applications.

what heads and cams?
ported PI heads and pretty much any cam, 30's are plenty.
ported TFS heads and a nasty nasty cam... would need something bigger ... 36's probably.

R3d:
I had the custom cams that you did I DD for me, ill have to find the spec's again, but they were making more HP than the comp cam's most agressive cam's. about a stage 2 port job on the heads w/oversized valves etc.
I was going to go for mid-high 30 lb's just from guesstimating but I wanted opinions from people who actually know what they're talking about :P
The pigtail thing is on the cobra pump?

I don't "act" like anything. I simply don't understand why people seem to correlate gear ratio and traction. You select the gear ration based on your wants/needs and your combination, NOT how much traction it'll allow. I also don't believe it is necessary to redo your "whole suspension" to get traction on the street. Your statement would have made a lot more sense it you simply would have said that 3.55-3.73's are best suited for this combination.
You said.............. Not to mention the fact that you pick gears based on your power band and the power band of the 5.4 is admittedly in the mid-rpm range more than the upper so bigger gears ...................which is CORRECT. You DO NOT select gears based on traction!

On that crank...the absolute last thing a stock bore 5.4 needs is more stroke, its already way undersquare and would be even harder to make hp at any decent kind of rpm. There are far, FAR better ways to spend $2600 IMO..... Hell for the price of the crank you can pick up a used centrifugal kit and gain ~100-150 hp.

Any chance you have an intake
I might be shopping a little too far ahead of time... but ehhh..

On the side note I want to also note I only want to achieve 450 crank hp and 550ish torque.
Will i meet my goal with a good set of ported heads....ffrp headers...bolt ons i have already and the intake.. Or will I choking my car possibly.. only need the fuel system upgrades if its choking me and keeping me from my goal.
I think the power i am looking for will be perfect for a daily car that will be tough enough to hold up against weather but yet ready to take to the track for some fun.
I think that HP and TQ should dock 1.5 seconds from the 1/8th.. Getting me close to 8.0 secs..

I can't see charging it anytime soon...Maybe a small shot of nos for the track..

This weather is beating my ***....i left radar detector and ipod plug in for the past week in my car... tried starting it up in the cold with a very new battery.... errr errrr errrrrrrrrrrrr click click click click click click.. I think you all know how this sounds lol!!

i'd always be willing to come out to anybodys house to help with the swap provided you paid for my travel there and back.

everyone interested in the long tubes/xpipe setup, think about what u want as far as 2.5 or 3 in from the headers to catback.... tj is working on mine being 3in but will do both depending on who needs them.
