it takes a 10mm open ended wrench and a lot of patience. There is something funky with the casting in that area where the bolt does not come right out and there is no direct tool access for a socket.

No offense but have you got the right size wrench, should be like 10mm. If you've got it really rounded, theres always the old hammer and chisel, and try to knock it loose with.

yeah im using a 10mm open end. its just on there so tight that it started to round the head. now i did find out the whole unit splits in two so you can use a socket =)
is the gasket between the adapted and block re-usable? the guys down at autozone cant find the gasket in the computer or any of the books

Thats what you want, its cheap so just replace it. Give them that part number, or go to ford.

I just hope you didnt mess up the O-rings on that thing. They're expensive from ford and thats about the only place I could find them. The big one was about $20

thanx for the advice guys. i wasnt sure about the al flywheel, was concerned most about lowering overall rotating mass/weight. hadnt considered a major effect on drivability.
i want the motor strong and reliable and as close to 400 crank hp as possible. it must be pump-gas friendly. ive owned a brand-x LS1, and it "called for" 93-octane, but ran fine on 87. i prefer the ability to run 87 mainly, 93 when i feel like it. do i need to change anything?
i'm pulling of my info from the SHM 4.6 book, my hands-on experience is with pushrod motors, and military diesels, so im a little out of my element.

anyone have under drive pullies on the 5.4 2v? I have some, considering putting them on. Any reasons not to? Losses? gains?

It should not matter as the block is the same regardless of what heads are on there. The oil filter adapter bolts to the block and not the heads.

The only issues I've heard about are potential charging issues with UDP's on modular motors in general.

that's what it looks like so far. I'm guessing on the 5/8 barb though. It could well need a 3/4" barb. I get my package from Summit today so I'll have an update by tomorrow. TPS has my headers on, sending the car around the corner to the muffler shop to have header flanges and my cats put on the mid-pipe today. Car should be back in my hands Saturday if everything holds.

all the stuff from the outside of your 4.6 goes on the 5.4. You should put in and take out essentially a bare motor.

that's how I did it.

That missing pulley could well be replaced with the big diameter smooth surfaced one off the 5.4. IIRC they're like 90mm.

if you want that level of performance you're going to need to feed it 91/93 octane pretty much all of the time. You can run stock compression ratios down at 9.x:1 and use 87 with a conservative tune but the small cubic inches and 2v head aren't helping NA flow. My motor with the longtubes should make within spitting distance of 400bhp but it'll never again see 87 octane gas. 400btq on the other hand you can make with a pretty mild motor but it won't rev as high or as fast. 400bhp works out to around 340rwhp which is the current record.

Should be fine.

There has been a lot of talk in the truck/lightning world about UDP's helping to lead to oil pump gear failure. I don't see 3hp as being worth the effort. The nice bit of good UDP's is the SFI certified balancer, otherwise I don't see a reason to bother. Sell em and buy tires.

so i might not be getting as much back on my taxes as i had planned. does anyone have a 5.4 shortblock that you dont need and would be willing to sell. i need it to be able to be dropped in and not need a rebuild. i was planning on buying a new shortblock but now thats not gonna happen.

Might have something to do w/ the 4V filter adaptors, which is a adaptor/cooler combo. If you're using a 2V (no cooler) adaptor, then you're fine w/ that gasket.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 2v's have a cooler too, the large canister JScottGT has in his picture. It might be different than a 4v cooler but thats what it looks like to me. The 4v does list a different gasket, looks like the oil holes might be a tiny bit larger.

The earlier GT's used the cooler shown in my picture, the 99+ had a generic oil filter adapter w/o the integrated cooler. Regardless of which one you have, they both use the same gasket.

4.6 trucks came with the cast intakes. I can't find any of the 5.4's with them, well except for the lightning lowers.

There are definately some cast 5.4 intakes....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...AQ:MOTORS:1123

Thats two piece too so it can be pulled apart to port. I'm just trying to find one thats PI if they exist. I didn't think so but someone I know on F150online.com has one that he claims is PI....

That is the same intake my 5.4 had on it when I bought it. That was a NPI engine. My guess is that cast manifold was for the NPI 5.4 engines.

Well Ford was nice enough to do alot of mix and matching for the '99 year. The engine I rebuilt, the 5.4 out of my dad's F150, had PI heads and a forged crank. It has that cast, 2 piece intake on it also. Supposedly they used both NPI and PI heads that year so it could be either one. Maybe we should ask Randy.
