going to see my car today. If the passenger side header is back on then I'll have them drag it over to TPS and have TPS do the fuel system and intake and slap it on the dyno.

Dan... good thought. The flanges are skeletonized right now but I'll bet they could fix that. Does anyone have a stock 3v header they're willing to cut the flange off and send to me? I'll check out here too but it never hurts to check.

Joey: welcome. Tell us more about your project. 2v,3v,4v? NA/FI? stock bottom end? cmon... make with the details.

Good news on the headers.

Looks like I'm getting delayed. Trying to get parts ordered and I cant even get that going. Being a auto tech in this economy blows right now. Got my bare block on a stand, everything is stripped down. The cam bores in the heads have some scoring so I'm scrapping those. Unfortunately, every penny I could salvage out of this was going to go towards my build, but now I need a damn clutch. Oh well.

Thx red. its a stock 2V out of a 2000 expidition *sp*
I'd like to go S/C. Still pretty new to the whole thing. So Ill be asking a bunch of questions as I do this swap. I'm renting a engine hoist for the weekend so hopefully everything will go well. I dont have the intake adapter plates so unfortunately I wont be able to fire it up yet. Correct me if I'm wrong but ya'll have had to fab up brakets for the powersteering, alternator and what else? the factory 5.4 heads will fit down in the engine bay? also will my factory fuel pump work for now? all advice will help greatly as I'm attempting it this weekend.

Hi guys im new to the site and have been digging through all the posts. im def going to this swap. i want to stay 2v because it seems to be the easiet. im on a budget so im prob just going to stay stock for now. from what i have read all the 5.4 stuff will work the same as the 4.6 all i have to do is get the hps intake, lengthin and widen the mid-pipe, and get a custom tune. i know i forgot something there. the only thing is i have a 6 bolt flywheel and im not sure what i have to change to make it work. any advice would be great. thx in advance

Sorry for no updates, the longtubes are a PITA to mock up. Update, the block has been disassembled, cleaned, bored .10 over, and mahl pistons and rods installed. PI heads polished a bit and installed. Engine is sitting in the GT right now waiting on intake to be purchased, cams as well, fab of the exhaust and the longtubes. So far everything has switched over perfectly with no inconviences other than the radiator hose had to be replaced. Also, 3.55 gears installed with 31 spine axels and an aluminum driveshaft installed. Gear heads who are planning this swap it is so simple and inexpensive. Thanks for everyones advice and answering my questions.

You'll need an 8 bolt flywheel or flexplate. Do you have an auto or a manual? What year?

That's great progress. Keep up the good work. Which intake are you going with?

Hey R3d, I thought about custom fab the intake by cutting the bottom half off the 5.4 and welding it to the 4.6 top after measuring and dicken around I decided that my blood is already boiling over the longtubes and I am wanting this thing on the road I decided to go with the hps intake. Waiting for the time and money to show up and then I will be ordering. After seeing your knowledge and time going into getting the intake into production I will go that route. BTW did you have any trouble getting the number 8 cylinder tube to fit without much clearence issues? Well off to the garage to get more work done and get this Stallion breathing to life again.

they didn't have anything but trouble with my pipes... The driver side was extremely tight but they got it to fit nicely. Passenger side looks like a snake orgy.

it's a PITA but totally possible with the right extensions and wobbles to hook the tranny back up with the motor in the car. It's just a real PITA.

With a 98, you'll need a new flywheel. 8 bolt, 10.5". IIRC, 99 cobra's had the part you'll want. If not, you should be able to use one for a 99/2000 GT. GT's went 11" around 2001.5.

okay so its easier to pull the trans out too.
so the only difference will be 8bolt, clutch size is the same?

should be the same size clutch, just different bolt count in the flywheel. Make sure when you buy your flywheel that it's a 10.5 and not an 11.

nope... the 04+ trucks come with the new block style. You'll want 97-03, unless you have a 05+ car. There are a bunch of other issues with putting the 4.6 in the truck. IIRC the 5.4 trucks have knock sensors and none of the 2v mustangs did, so it'll need a tune at minimum.

Depending on what you're paying for it, I would just sell the truck (or SUV) and 4.6 separately. It's not worth the effort to insert the 4.6 IMO, since engine-swapped vehicles rarely make back what you pay for them (especially in your case, since you're downgrading to a smaller engine.)

I'm glad you brought that up about the block. The 3v's that I've been seeing are from newer vehicles, so I would have been screwed if I had bought one. Looks like I won't be able to to direct swap. I'll have to pick up a block, find some 3v heads, and go from there .

KarKraft has 3v heads for $400 complete, I think you can still use the 3v block, just have to use the older style motor mounts, not sure if anything has to be modified.

Does that 05+ issue only apply to Mustangs? Because the P71's that I've been looking at lately have been 05's. And I take it that's $400 per head?

do you guys think a fidanza billet aluminum fly wheel would hold up to the torque of the 5.4?

I'm not sure when they went with 3v's in the Vic's
$400 for a set, it lists them as 4.6 3v heads but that shouldnt matter
