Default cams selection

They are not the same. The GT500 uses the same cams as the 03/04 Cobras, Machs, Aviators, Marauders and all Navigators. The GT cams are unique to it and are also the same cams that Ford sells as an upgrade for the GT500 (not a good bang for the buck mod). The Cobra R cams are also unique and have a lot more lift and duration than all other stock 4v cams.

Also, the GT and the GT500 use the same heads and they were not used on the Cobra R, but the Cobra R heads are a lot different.

4V cams specs
Mach 1, 03/04 Cobra, Aviator, Marauder, Navigator
Intake: 184 deg @ .050/.394 lift
Exhaust: 196 deg @ .050/.397" lift
114 LCs

96-98 Cobra
Intake: Primary Lobe, 196 deg @.050/ .390 lift
Secondary Lobe, 206 deg @.050/ .390 lift
Exhaust: 196 deg @.050/ .390 lift
114/114 LCs

99/01 Cobra
Intake: 196 deg @.050/.392 lift
Exhaust: 194 deg @.050/.390 lift
114 LCs

FR500 (M-6550-T46)
intake adv dur 258 @.003/ 212 deg @.050 /.472 lift
exhaust adv dur 254 @.003/ 208 deg @.050 /.472 lift
109 LCs

GT Cams (actual as tested numbers, not Ford specs)
Intake: 189 @ .050"/.424 lift
Exhaust: 190 @ .050"/.448" lift
The centerlines are up for debate as this set tested at 122/118 but I think the Ford states the LCs as 114/114

With that, the 96-98 intake cams along with any of the exhaust cams would be best stock cams for a 5.4.
I guess there is no spec's or getting the 2000 Cobra R cams or replicas is just ridiculous hard praobably or expensive as hell...

and thanks N/A SVT

How were the Cobra R heads different? The GT/GT500 heads are the final development on them but they all shared the same raised intake, etc.

The Boss 260s and 290s use 03/04 heads.

Damn, you're better off running duel injectors like in the Ford GT since there is no way your fuel delivery is going to be precise w/ those monsters.

on the fr500 and GT cams if i were to run those in 96-98 heads with a 3 or possibly even 5 angle valve job, and clean up the bowls and raise the ceiling on the exhaust ports would i see a decent increase in power at least enough to bother with it? Also since the lift is so high on those cams would i notice a change in idle? i would like to get something that has a slight lope to it. thanks

I hope you all don’t mind a non Mustang owner posting on this forum. In the fall of 2006, I built a 1997 Lincoln Towncar with a 5.4 that does low 13’s in the ¼. Not bad for a 4,600# (race weight) land yacht. I am one of first people to install this package into a Panther that the hood could close without it being cut. You can find the details at www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/16549 if you’re interested. I come from the Crownvic.net arena but not at a novice by any stretch of the imagination.

First of all, I like all of the great work done with the 5.4 on this site. I am looking for any additional data you can provide about the new intake. I am very interested in drivability issues and actual gains per your application. Also, any before and after rpm curves versus hp & tq would be very helpful. Lastly, I would like to know if anyone adjusted the injector’s pluses width after installing the intake? As you know, the injectors are on a crazy angle with the adapter plates. Thank you in advance…Steve

Nice . If I end up having the money for a 5.4, it will be going into the 04 P71 that I'm about to pick up.

Steve welcome and thanks for posting up. Your experiences can only be helpful.

The new intake is pretty fantastic from what I can see so far. I'll have dyno results on mine with the new longtubes in a couple weeks if everything holds together. Otherwise, so far the only comparisons are indirect. The new intake is based on the old 4.6 HPS intake which showed good but predictably not striking (the intake isn't the cork on a 4.6) performance. The 4.6 intake helped an over-cammed car pick up the bottom end a tad and made a little more top end power with solid mid-range gains and has made a showing on a couple 700hp monsters. The 5.4 version is wider overall and deeper in the plenum, has shorter runners with no towers and a handful of other little improvements.

Adapter plates have caused me a few minor but constant headaches, chiefly having to run excessive amounts of fuel for a given AF, periodic stalling, coolant and vacuum leaks and there's no way to correctly position the COP modules with most intakes. Tuning has been something of a bitch. I ported my plates to match the intake and heads and clearanced a bit around the injector spray area to get the plates out of the fuel spray path as much as possible. There's just no good solution short of the new intake for fuel related bits.

On the upside the new hardball'r fits under a stock hood and it's more than sufficient to feed a set of ported PI heads.

Thoughts?

Thoughts – The adapter plates were a PIA due to not matching up to the intake ports and irregular bolt heads made in Japan. The first thing we noticed were the plates not aligning properly. After several bolts latter, we decided to grind down the heads of each bolt by .005, which resolved round one. Round two, required porting of the plastic PI intake for a good match, very easy. I have two issues with this setup, the PI intake is starving for air at the end of the track and injector angle is…wrong. As far as tuning, WOT is great but we did have help from Bob Kurgan. I am currently working out a few drivability issues at part throttle and some trans tuning through the SCT software. Overall, it’s a nice setup that fits under the hood. Now, I would like an intake for a 5.4, not a make fit. Once I resolve this, porting the heads is next, and then forge the internals. My 5.4 is stock, I got it from a dearer wreck with 91 miles on it for $1,000, talk about a deal.

So for those that wanted more data on a stock engine with bolt-ons, here she is.

the harball'r intake should fix all your issues. the one i have on sleepingGT's 99gt fits perfect and was ported to match his TEA heads.

Thanks guys, I had a chat with Bob before the truck dyno had been completed. I was hoping to capture some non-stock rpm curves.

Hey guys I've been out of the scene here for awhile due having a baby and moving. Anyways I still have my 5.4 powered Mustang and I'm lookin real hard at the Hardballr 5.4 intake. I'm curious to see how it performs vs. the crappy adapter plates and a stock pi intake. I'm guessin it would be well worth the investment and I can't wait to see some dyno results.

No, it depends on the year of the block, we have seen several covers. I don't know which cover will work on each block. I got my engine complete.

Hey guys been gone a bit, Mywill why such big injectors, you going E85 with HIGH boost? I'm going to be cutting the Victor JR in two soon and welding it back together, I will post some pics as I go. New turbonetics T76 is here, new style 60 lb injectors and a shiny new Miller tig welder. I plan on finishing my shorty turbo headers and re-doing some piping on my turbo set up. Also need to make room for T76 as it wont fit where I had my T63.
