Anyone intrested in 5.4L swaps, in here. Need you to opine.
As long as they can maintain port velocity, they should rock. 4V power w/ 2V torque, should be great. On a side note, if any company was serious, they would make Hemi heads for the Mods since the Hemi chambers would solve the 2V's greatest problem (valve size). Plus, given the head architecture, I don't see it hard to do (if Ford can put Hemi OHC heads on pushrod blocks, it shouldn't be hard to rework the heads so the valves are laid out like in the 3V heads, minus a valve).
INTERESTING, SUMMIT HEADS. I ONCE CALLED EDELBROCK AND WAS TOLD THE TOLERANCES WERE SO TIOGHT THAT AN AFTERMARKET HEAD WAS NOT A PROBABILITY. PERHAPS IF THIS HAPPENS OTHER COMPANIES WILL JOIN IN AND THE PRICES WILL COME DOWN BECAUSE WHEN A VENDOR SAYS THEY WILL NOT BE CHEAP EVEN BEFORE THE WORD IS GIVEN FOR SURE AND CARVED IN STONE ONE HAS TO WONDER. ALSODYNO N UMBERS OR OTHER REALWORLD NUMVBERS WILL BE NEEDED TOL MAKE ME FORK OUJTJ BIG BUCKS WHEN HITECH MOTORSPORT SAYS THEIR HEAD CAN MAKE UPTO80HP. SORRY FOR THE CAPS.
Damn.. That sucks. They're kinda expensive, and they might not even fit. I wonder if it would just be better to have a set custom made. Anyone care to venture what I would pay for a typical shop to crank out a set of longtubes for me? And I apologize for making posts that are OT.
That's the poorest excuse ever. Ford doesn't seem to have problems churning these heads out and if they bitch about the tolerances, then I would never want to buy their heads since that's the last thing I want them to be lazy on. I don't so what would require more accuracy than in a pushrod head, except for the cam caps but if the aftermarket has no problem w/ Gen III GM stuff for heads and blocks, why not Ford. My theory, just like w/ Cleveland heads, is that it's hard to make a profit when the factory makes good stuff already. For example, Cleveland 2V heads are average yet there was no Mustang 5.0 sized aftermarket for these heads since factory 4V heads are awesome, to say the least. Same thing goes for the Mods. Stock 2V is eh but 3V and 4V heads are perfect and if more is needed, porting is good enough.
Interesting.. According to what I just read, 04+ P71's have an 80mm MAF (with accompanying tune,) and the same airbox that they used in the Marauders
. Based on comparisons of engine bay shots, I'd say that's correct.

I believe you were responding to my post. The way I remember Edelbrock said something on the line of "the heads are produced in a temperature controlled sedtting due to the critical cam journals in thne proper alignment with the bores of ther pistons" Please don't quoye me on that but perhapos call Edelbrock and see what they have to say.
Even with the other heads offered by Ford there are ten times the number of cars out there with 2V heads, a million probably, obviously not all in the modding area but plenty top make producing a head profitable. Edelbrock recently made an aluminum head for the 348/409's!!!!!! Those haven't been made since, what, 1964? How many 409'scompared to 2V modular Mustangs and other Ford models that have potentrial modders owning them?
Odd isn't it? Edelbrock had a reason why we would not see an aftermarket head, at least from them. Again, if somebody does produce a head that is competively priced I c an see other manufacturers making the effort to produce a head for the 2V's. Imagine a head on par with the best street/strip head that AFR makes available for the 4.6!!! That would be nearly a 100hp GAIN FOR POWER ADDED MOTORS OR MORE AND EVEN GREAT INCREASES FOR THE NA GUYS LIKE MYSELF!
I AM ALSO A FAN OF THE BUICK NAILHEAD MOTOR, LAST PRODUCED IN 1966 AND THE GUYS HAVE APPROACHED EDELBROCK MANY TIMES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF AN ALUMINUM HEAD FOR THEM, NO! IS THE ANSWER YET THAT OLD 409 GETS A SET BECAUSE IT IS A CHEVY!
I sure hope someb ody starts a head for the 2V and starts a head choice from others also! Mark
It will be cool to see what this head can do, but frankly I'm shocked to see one at this point. They are at least 5 years behind the peak market demand and likely won't perform any better than a 3v head that is readily available and cheap. The time for 2v heads is on the downslope, they might make money on it but they would have made a ton more if they had gotten off their asses 5 years ago.....
Still, Edelbrock and everyone else is making up excuses just because they feel 2V heads are not profitable since 4V heads are much better. Though even if Edelbrock made 2V heads, I have a feeling they'd be like their Cleveland 4V heads and flow only marginally better. However, I do hope some company comes out w/ it since that will open the flood gates.
Time, will tell, but I would be 10 times more shocked by that than by seeing one coming out now. Unless someone like Edelbrock is already well into development it would take a couple years to get one out, and by then we will be 7 or 8 years into the 3v era. The only way I can see someone else getting into it is if TrickFlow is selling them by the hundreds and that would only be possible if they were priced around $1200, when I have a feeling they will be over $2000. Very small market for $2000+ heads and not one that needs multiple competitors.....
SEMA is basically the organization that represents most of the big aftermarket companies. In addition, they are your friend since they fight for you in court when states try to implement laws that harm you.
I know who SEMA is and what they do. I get the SAN emails. I just didn't know when the show was.
Hey im new to this thread but have been following it for awhile. Im planning on doing this swap over winter. i have a cobra so i have the 4v motor in the car already so would swapping the dohc navigator engine be as simple as your 2v swaps. is there a 4v intake for the 5.4 4v other than the boss 290 or the cobra r that would fit under a a stock hood or no bigger than 3 or 4 inch cowl because i found the boss intake for around 2500 and thats really not an option for an intake for me right now being a semi broke college student
johnny: there are intakes available. MMR and Boss330 Racing both make variations on the box upper navigator lower setup. Reichard, Sullivan and a couple others make 4v intakes as well for 5.4. You could also just use your stock intake and a set of 4v adapter plates.
You'll want to call up Maximum Motorsports and have them whittle you out a set of 1/2" k-member spacers. the rest should basically bolt up.

I've read through birdman's thread. What he's done is quite impressive and I'd love to get one of those kits but I'm not going to put $2500+ into an intake, not yet anyway. Thankfully, MM&FF ran a big intake comparison for 5.4L's on a Navigator block. So I'm going to shop around for one of those.
Have you spoken to birdman about his work? I'm thinking of trying to buy a kit minus the intake.
So where have you guys been finding your complete 5.4 engines? I've been checking the local Graiglist/eBay, but I haven't had any luck. The engines that I HAVE been finding are in crappy condition

Select a vehicle, year, engine, area, and browse away.... They cross reference pretty well so if you select "F150" it should pull up engines from Expeditions and such with a similar VIN number.
