Default Intake questions

I was reading a ad on the Mac Straight Shot Intake with mass air flow and the claim was up to a 20 hp gain over stock. I have heard people claim that most cold air intakes do nothing for our cars and to just stick to a k and N filter in the stock box with the silencer removed. Is it worth 200 or more dollars to buy the complete Mac set up with mass air flow?

No, you have no need to go with a new MAF unles your pushing a very good amount of power. I had the C&L 85mm maf on my car for awhile and all it did was lean out my a/f and slow me down. Ive heard the same thing from other people with the straight shot also. Save the money for headers/midpipe or gears.

Definitely wrong on HP gain unless there are other mods to go with it. Just go K&N. Removing the air silencer doesn't really do much either.

Get a high flow air filter,K&N,or SB.You can trim the air silencer so that the opening in the fenderwell is equal to or greater than the size of the throttle body. This will draw cooler fenderwell air into the intake wile leaving $200 in your pocket. The screen in front of the MAM is something else you can look at.I removed the screen and replaced the rubber gasket to it's original location in front of the MAM.Some people say that you can get a lean condition by removing the screen. In my case I have not noticed any adverse effects (detonation). The stock MAM can support around 400 HP,so untill you get close to that,I wouldn't change MAM's.

I have that same intake set up but alot of other mods to boot that all went on at the same time. Here is the stuff I put on when I bought all of the parts.

Mac Straight Shot w/ 85mm MAF, Accufab 75mm T/b and Elbow, Mac Prochamber and Flowpath Catback, FRPP 4.10 gear, Superchips Custom Dyno Tune

I bought the full intake system from the intake itself all the way to the plenum because of a KILLER deal that was going on. I can't say what gave me the most gain but it all played a part I'm sure. The one thing that you would need to assure not having problems would be a tune although MAC says you don't need one. The Straight Shot uses your factory electronics off of your MAM that is already there. I went ahead and did it because I want a Pro Charger in the not too distant future as well.

Final numbers after all of my stuff was added were 273hp and 314tq.
