Call up MMR (www.modularmustangracing.com). They're up in Ventura and make killer engines local to you. They're in line with DSS and others but they're local.

Grab an MMR 600 or MMR 900 shortblock and stick your heads and accessories on it. The motors from DSS or MMR are shortblocks. The 3000 dollar motor from FRPP is probably a longblock that's complete from intake to oil pan.

Craigslist.com will probably be your best bet for a bone stock 99-04 motor for under 1K. I can grab you a complete 4.6 almost anytime in NorCal for less than 1000 bucks off craigslist. If it saves you 2K then spending 400 bucks on gas to drive and get a motor is cheap.
