Default Work and Pay Related Question

I started a new job a little over a month ago as an electrical engineering lab tech for a company that supplies companies such as IBM, Dell, General Motors, Cisco, and a lot of other places that have needs for massive data transfer. It's been a great place to work for and being in the engineering department, I am working with a lot of smart people which is nice.

They don't have me on salary yet so I have been clocking in and clocking out. I typically get to work at least fifteen minutes before and stay five to ten minutes after everyday. On every one of my paychecks I accumulate about 1.5-2.5 hours of overtime, which is a nice little bonus on every check. This past week, they had me at exactly 40 hours, which I know is bullshit. It is possible that they gave me too much OT the week before last, 3.5 hours which I couldn't figure out how that happened, so they are making up for it this past week.

Should I go ask HR what's up or let it fly and see what happens this week? If I don't ask about it now and it happens again I will be pretty pissed. If I get to work early, I start working, I don't just piddle around. The project that I'm on is automatically approved for OT so I don't know what the issue could be.

I would ask IMO and if they bring up the 3.5 hours overtime from the previous week just say you didn't realize.

some places round the punches in/out to the nearest 5/10/15 minutes so you can clock in 15 minutes early but it won't necessarily give it to you, although judging from your first check, it seems like they do.

check with HR, there isn't a penalty for asking.

As long as the overtime is approved, they shouldn't be able to mess with your timecard. I know when I was hourly, it was illegal for my manager to go in and adjust my timecard, say to remove hours and so forth. They could adjust it for vacation and sick time and such, but they can't just remove hours because you clocked some overtime if it's approved. I would call HR about it and look into it.

I agree, I would definitely ask what is going on. Where I work I normally punch in on time but end up punching out a good half our after my scheduled shift seeing I'm a shift manager and I'm expected to wrap up my shift. They don't like giving overtime obviously, but it's part of my responsibility so give it to me. More often than not though they will send people home or even edit their time punches as to not give more OT; which in turn translates into a bigger bonus for them. Hell, I've even heard that out of my boss' mouth.

Thanks for the input. I think I am going to wait to see what happens on the next check though. They could possibly put it on this up coming week.

Everyone I work with is already on salary and I know they all work over 40 hours a week just as I do. However, if I can currently get my OT, I want it.

Yeah get the OT while its available thats for sure, when I worked when I was like 25 or so in a production plant back in Allentown, PA we had OT available all the time to us. I would work like 16hrs over the time all the time. We worked like 10hr shifts and I would go in 3hrs early or stay 3hrs late...

Was nice for sure!
