Default OT, Computer Network problems, cuz im dumb.

Ok, first off i never claimed to be computer literate.

When it comes to networking, i dont know my ******* from an ethernet port.

But i am familiar with navigating around computers and doing basic stuff.

Here is what i want to accomplish.

1) I want to access the shared folders on my Desktop through my Laptop. Any pointers or directions on where to go with this? I have a wireless network, but i just dont have the know-how to do this. Im good at figuring stuff out, i just need to know what direction to go with this.

2) is it possible to have my laptop backup the shared folders for file reduancy? or to maybe partition it to mirror the shared folders? Im always worried about losing all my data in a harddrive crash. Im looking into getting a secondary hard disc to mirror the one i currently have in the PC, but i would be perfectly happy if i could just do this with the shared folders on the laptop.

Help folks?

i suck @ teh netwurkz

Okay i dont know how to tell you to mirror across a network, but to share files its kinda easy. XP and Vista is basically the same on sharing, except vista can be easy or hard, depends if it wants to work. Basically, all you do is right click a folder, and go to properties, find the share tab, then follow the steps right there, vista and xp basically, you just click "share this folder" occasionally u have to click "I know the risk's, just share the folder." After you do that, you go to your permissions, and you set them to full control for everyone, and with your laptop or desktop, you remember the names for that computer, and you open run and type "//computername" and press enter, it will then open up that computer, and show you the folders that are shared. Once you double click them, you may have to enter your username and password used on THAT computer. Then you can access them. Thats a QUICK rundown of sharing. To do a mirror on your desktop, or laptop (if it can hold two drives) you need to have a second hard drive, and you must use sata or else the windows mirror doesnt work well for me, at least i dont trust it. After you get two SATA drives, and have them connected, you run your RAID configuration at your computers boot process. You will need them to be set into RAID 1. That mirrors both drives, Make sure they have the same RPM, Cache, and space. Then you should be all set! Hope any of this helps!
