Default Job Offer

I finally got a job offer this week but I'm not sure if I should take it. It's almost an hour from where I live and I would have to drive the stang most days. That means alot of wear and tear that I would prefer not to put on the car. It is a day job and for a new nurse that is quite an accomplishment. And it would be working in surgery which is an area that I am very comfortable, as I spent 2 years as a surgical tech. But it also has a significant amount of on call requirements which I was assured would taper off, but I'm not so sure I want to bet the farm on a hope. The day hours would allow me to be able to do more for my kids but the on call would diminish that a bit. It starts at $19/hr, which is a little higher than most of the hospitals here for new nurses but the travel would eat up the extra money. So I'm really torn between accepting and holding out for a better offer. Any thoughts?

first off....congrat on the offer!!

As far as considering the job....in my opinion you could always get a beater car to take back and forth from work. that'll save your stanger from a lot of miles as well as all the possible hazards that come from highway driving. I don't know what your finances are but at 19/hr you could get a cheap 2k car and also save yourself on some gas. If this is the job you want..I say go for it. If the on call doesn't slow down you can always look for other opportunities. If this frees up some time for your kids that's always a plus!!! They are only kids once. But whatever decision you choose I'm sure it'll be the best for you and your family

Congrats on the job offer. Maybe it's just the area, but 19hr seems kinda low. Around here I know nurses make almost $40hr starting. I work at hospital and I know they get paid well.

Congrats on the offer! is this the first offer or do you get them regularly? I think you should get a beater and take the offer. Its experience and looks good on a resume', plus its sounds like this is your area so you should be comfortable. 19.00 per hour is better than 0.00 per hour. On-call should paid more. I dont know about Tenn. but gas is going down alittle around here so that might help a little. GOOD LUCK !!!

I guess buy the sounds of it and the pay that this is probably not a nursing position, per se, but more of a tech assignment.

An hour commute these days sucks. Assuming it is 50 miles each way, that adds to 100 miles per day or 500 per week....for about 24k miles per year. That equals $4000 in gas at 24 mpg plus an additional $3600 per year in added deppreciation. So, as you can see, buying a beater will quickly pay for itself.

Actually it is a nursing position in the operating room. It's something I'm very comfortable with but I would prefer to work trauma. Unfortunately, I can't devote the hours necessary to work in an emergency room. I have to wait until my husband is back to continue pursuing my dream of flight nurse.

For this area of Tennessee, $19/hr is pretty standard for new nurse. You have to factor in that the cost of living is fairly low, I bought my 2000 sq/ft home on over an acre of land for $70k. And yes it's nice!!

Thanks Waterdr for the numbers it really makes it very plain that a beater is going to be in the near futer....any one selling?

I am currently on vacation down here next to pcola, in Gulf Shores, AL, with no internet in the room, so I have to drive down to the local McD's to get online,, so I will be checking in and out. Thanks for all the feed back, it's always good to hear other takes on a situation.

I had a similar case recently: my mustang averages about 17mpg combined. My new job (p****ouse) is 36 miles from my house. Gas for my car costs about 4.75 in the best of times lately. So, I would spend about 25 bucks a day on gas just to get to work in my stang, plus another 200 bucks a month in additional maintenance from all the extra miles and tires which I CANNOT be gentle to. So we're at 700 bucks a month to drive my hotrod.

I bought an 01 saturn SL1 with no options but a cd player for $5K. It gets an astonishing and confirmed 34.7 mpg combined city/highway driving. Including insurance my monthly payment is 190 bucks, for 3 years. It takes 2 gallons a day to get to work and back which is on easier 87 octane at around 4.20 a gallon. So 10 bucks a day (includes maintenance) as opposed to 25 bucks a day = $10/day x 20 days a month = $200 + 190 = 390. So, I save more than the cost of my new car purchase and the cost to own it every month on fuel savings alone. If work was anything less than about 30 miles away it wouldn't work out quite as well but it does.

IMHO. that's pretty good money at most levels. You don't indicate if it's entry level, or your age for that matter. You could earn well over 40 grand a year with a little overtime.

My aunt is a surgical assistant, she's been one since I was a little fart. She aint hurting for anything material because she has had a great career, She recently bought her latest house and i haven't seen it but my mom says it's as big as a castle.

19 bucks an hour is great money around here, even with an good education. And if it's what you are comfortable doing, We need more people like you in our hospitals. Just think how many lives you could help save. I'm sure you would be an asset to any hospital who hires you. Believe me when I say I have met many doctors and nurses and assistants, and they always get my upmost respect for the care I have received.

You'll be pulling in the big bucks after you've been at it for a while. Then you can buy whatever car you want with cash.. GL and go for it I say..

As it turns out the pay is actually closer to $20, soooooo I took the position !!! With the extra from call pay and such I should more than make up for the cost in gas. Any one got a beater to sell?!?

It is an entry level position so I can only go up. My age?...Well, just suffice it to say that this is my mid-life career

Start working on 18 Aug. which gives me 2 weeks of me time while my kids are in school....wooooooohooooo!!!!

Not weird at all. I just came off of vacation this week. I was off work for 10 days. I wanted to quit work my last week before vacation, I was very irritable and would fly off the handle over minor ****. Back to work on Monday and it was the same old grind that had me ready to quit before, but I was actually glad to be doing it because I love my job..

You just got know when it's time to get away from it and take some R & R.

Congrats on the new position. Sometimes I wonder what it's like to take on a new career at my age. It's pretty scary actually. I just gotta last for 15 more years so I can retire, until then I will stay where I'm at because I'm comfortable.

Sometimes I think "outside of the box" , but I never actually jump out of it. If that makes any sense..
