Default real quick exhaust question

Hello again, I recently purchased a new O/R H pipe along with shorty headers and a tuner for my 04 gt and I have a question.

Right now my car has no muffler and I like the sound but wanted it a little bit louder. With the H pipe or the headers I know it will get a decent amount louder. But with both it would irritatingly loud dont you think? I hear there is almonst no point in getting headers (to help flow) if your going to have mufflers (that restrict flow). I have a pair of supper 40's ready to go on the car but I dont know if I want to put them on if it would just null the small gain from headers. Any thoughts?

I was thinking I would just have the garage who is doing the install to put on the headers and H pipe and let me see how loud it is, if its then too loud I would have them put the mufflers in.

Any help is appreciated.

i think you should have gotten long tube headers they will be much louder and produce better flow then the shorty headers IMO, im not too familiar about gt's with no mufflers, the other guys will be able to help with that, but i think you should use the mufflers because of the O/R H with be a great improvement in sound for a GT

thx for your response.

Im just wondering though will the mufflers null out the small gain from shorties?

If you want loud and power then look at some SLP LM2 mufflers. You're losing tq and sound quality without mufflers so I really encourage you to get some that will accentuate the sounds you want and kill off the sounds you don't. See below:

With LM2's, off road H and shorty headers you'll have the sound you want. You can also consider flowmasters or Mac mufflers with pro-dumps (turndowns) for a little more muscular sound at the cost of more resonance.

thanks redneck, your always a big help.

So, I should put on the mufflers which would actually increase my TQ slightly. Super 40's sound pretty good IMO so I think I will toss those on. Thanks a bunch you two.

Fully open exhausts, especially those with OR-H pipes lose tq under 4000rpm. If you put mufflers on you'll gain a little back pressure for more tq and I'd bet a crispy dollar that'd work in any machine that your HP numbers won't drop because of it.

Flows resonate a bit in the cabin between 1800 and 2300rpm so be aware of that. LM2's are way raspier but tend to sound really good on mild GT's.

Will I already have the super 40's so I will try them out, I can always try the LM2's later If I do not like the 40's.

Only mods I have are shorty headers, h pipe, and a tune. I am putting on gears in a few weeks along with UDP's.

thx again.

You are going to hate life with no cats and mufflers on a street car. You need to add those mufflers just to keep the police away.

I don't have cats on my car and everyone loves the sound of it. Cops don't know if I have them or not, but they hate the sound when I'm downtown because it echo's so much. I do have muffers though and Spike_Africa is right, the car would be like a cop magnic with no cats or muffers. My car does smell pretty bad without the cats, but then again I never had them on in the first place and I'm in the proces of removing the Smog Pump since there is no use for it. It will free more engine bay and I will see some performance out of it.

H-pipe and longtubes get you the muscular sound, right now im draggin the ground on my road so im lookin for smaller mufflers like the LM1's. i want loud but not offroad loud. look at it this way, if your attracting unwanted attention then you did a good job lol.

Aight here's my two cents... I have an 01 Bullitt. I run an o/r h and had flowmaster super 44's for a while, they sound good. I recently switched to pypes violators. The violators sound pretty similar to the SLP loudmouths. Here's a video of my car with both setups so you can hear for yourself about how ur car will sound with either setup.

There's a couple other vids on my page as well of the car riding down the road and such. Hope it helps...

Eh to each his own i suppose. Like i said, i get bored easily and EVERY mustang around here has Flowmasters. I still got em so maybe one day i'll switch back to em. But for now, I kinda like the Violators.

I would tell you my set up, but I don't even know my own and I have no videos or sound clips. :/

cr4sh_0v3rl0ad - I know what you mean, but doesn't mean you have to go back, just try something new. I want a different sound on my Motorcycle, I'm thinking of taking the muffer off. LOL My car scares the **** out of people, but wait until there is no muffer on my bike. lol

Yeah that **** is pretty loud and mean, but also a cop magnic. One of our rides a guy came along with a Yellow Daytona and it had just a pipe, he drove by these girls and he reved it up. They got scared and tripped up the sidewalk, but thoes who were sitting down freaked out. It was funnier then ****, that's when I was like hmm.

Yeah I was talking about not having cats and not having mufflers. Its gonna sound like a dump truck, which isn't cool.

R3d, you fell in the n00b trap. Backpressure has nothing to do w/ this. It's all about the gas velocity. Low velocity means higher pressure in the exhaust while higher velocities create a low pressure (and thus a vacuum), but up to a point. Running no mufflers alone won't kill performance, it's when the car isn't tuned that way and if the pipes are too big that the low end is hurt.

As for the original long tube comment, mufflers have no bearing on whether you should run them. If you want the most out of the engine, run long tubes. If you're worried about the law, run shorties.

Today I got the mufflers installed with an O/R H from jegs.

The sound....WOW. It is exactly what I was looking for. It does resonate a bit like R3D said but I still really really enjoy it.

Thanks to everyone who offered to help.
