Default I Hate My Exhaust Rattle!

Ever since I had my headers/mid-pipe installed in August, my car has had a rattling noise that comes from the rear passenger side. It reverberates through the car, but I can tell that's where it is coming from. It is definitely a 'metal on metal' sound. It used to rattle only in lower RPM's and when I was idling. I just noticed today that it does it when it is in park as well. x a million.

I have replaced two of the hangers, but I don't think they are the problem. When you stand behind the car, you can see that the passenger side exhaust tip vibrates more than the driver's side. It's like it is not as solid. It did it before and after I replaced the rear-most hangers.

I have gotten under there several times when I can hear it to try to pinpoint it, and I still cannot locate it. I don't think it is anything bad. It is just annoying the hell out of me and I'm almost to the point of where I'm ready to go back to my measly stock exhaust. I have taken it back to the muffler shop 3 times and they cannot even find it or hear it. They told me that there is nothing wrong with it, but everyone else I know hears it loud and clear.

Any suggestions on what I should do or what it could be?

I know what mean, it's annoying as ****. My driver side tip will vibrate occasionally when at idle and the sound will flow through the entire car lol. Im guessing it's my hanger but haven't looked far into it. Don't know of any other factor that would cause it.

I really don't want to take it to another shop. I'd rather save the money and have it fixed at home, because like I said, I don't think it is anything major.

Did someone drop a bolt or screw into your exhaust? That would suck.

its the exhaust tip hangers most likely, after time some shift. I just fixed mine the other day. If you have the car lifted you will be able to see where the metal from the tip hanger is hitting metal on the frame. Then just bend it away

I would jack the car up, go under it and check every single bolt and connection on the whole exhaust system. That is where I would start for sure. Also my cars exhaust does not rattle, my exhaust makes things rattle around me lol.

Check and make sure your o2 sensors are tight. I had one loose on mine that was causing a rattle sound.

I don't think it is the tip hangers. I've looked at them and none of them seem to be anywhere near the body. They're all at least 1.5" away from all parts of the frame. I have also had all the connections checked. They're all tight as hell and you couldn't fit a gnat's *** between them. Something could have been missed, though.

Thanks for your suggestions, guys. I'm going to have my uncle check everything again for me, just to be sure. It is getting on my last nerve.

Hahaha, I thought about that at first. My dad really wanted me to and still wants me to, but I think that's only because he wants to drive it everywhere (which is what he did with my Mustang when I first got it. I drove it maybe 3 times in the first two weeks I had it). I just love my Mustang too much and I'm not willing to part with it.

Edit: But if I could have both my Mustang and a GTO, hell yeah.

it probably needs to be bent a little. i had the same problem it was the pipe knocking against part of the under carriage, a few minute on the lift and its all gone

Did you look where the exhaust goes over the axel? there is hardly any room between the driveshaft and the underbody. i had to play with mine for awhile to get it right. Also do you have the rubber or metal hangers?

I finally found the rattle Friday night! It was the first set of hangers on the passenger side. The hanger off the exhaust tip was literally touching the hanger on the car. I'm not sure how I need to fix it. Can I wrap it in thick rubber (it won't be touching the exhaust), or should I have the exhaust tip hanger bent? I want a permanent solution, not one I'll have to go back and fix in 6 months.
