Default Need a tranny...

I have a white 2004 mustang GT with a 10,000 mile old t-3650. I'm at 37,000 miles, so I'm out of warranty. I have already argued with ford, to no avail.

My 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are shot, 3rd gear is unusable. Went to ford, they said there's nothing they can do other than replace it, which is 3500 dollars.

With this said:

1)Rebuild. Costs around 2500 dollars after everything's said and done, this is my 1st option.

2) New t-3650. About 3000 dollars from a reputable place installed, I don't really want to do this because my transmission is less than 10,000 miles old, and I'm afraid of the same damned thing happening again.

3) T-56 or other six speed? This is where my real question lies.

A) how much could I get one for? I found one (Rebuilt or new.. Can't remember) for about 1500 (including core charge)
B) would there be more involved than a tranny swap and a new shifter/boot?
C) I've read in places that you need a shorter driveshaft for the t-56... Is this true?

4) Do you guys have any other suggestions on good transmissions? '

Anything under 3500 dollars is doable.

Thanks for the help. (here goes my college fund )

One more question. Is there a specific transmission-only forum? I was fairly confused as whether or not to put this is 4.6L tech or general tech. Thanks!

From what I have read I think you almost covered it all.

I THINK I have read that with the T56 swap... along with another drive shaft you will need a new tranny cross member too. I may be wrong though. I would be willin to bet you could get that swap done for under 3500... especially if you did the work your self. It shouldnt be too hard. Another thing... seems like i remember seeing somewhere that the angle of the drive shaft will be slightly off too and ya gotta get that inline... Hell as far as I know that could be where the cross member comes into play.

ANyway.... GL with your tranny!

Dude, you really need to hit Ebay, you can find plenty of trannies with low miles for under 1 grand.

and you can swap them out yourself, it cant be that difficult. i think you have to unbolt the exhaust, undo drive shaft, and unbolt the tranny right? get a haynes manual and save yerself a TON.

What about a tko-600 or a t-5? I'm extremely interested in the T-5, but isn't that what they put in 1999-mid 2001? Or was that the t-45?

anyway, I'd like your opinions on these

Haha, it's still gotta be under 3500 after install.. With that tranny I'd need to modify the driveshaft, all kinds of other goodies.. No way I'd get away with that for under 4000 dollars.

(I have to get it installed at a shop)

T5s are weak.

Also, unfortunately, changing out tranies is a pain since Ford thought it's a great idea to make the bellhousing part of the trans and not removable. However, I'd stick w/ a used TR3650 ( Kar Kraft have them for $600 from time to time) or a TKO since a T56 is overkill since 2 overdrives are overkill and the trans is heavy.

Man if you can afford it or swing it somehow, I would do the six speed. The car sounds likes its worth the cost. That big hole will help on the highway. Hope everything works out for ya.

TKO 500 is going in now, after install it came out to be ~3500. Not bad for a sick transmission!
