Talking Where to start?

I have a 03 gt and my steering has about 1/2 - 1 of play in it. Any ideas on where to start ? Ive takin the car to a shop and they told me that everything was tight. Need some ideas on where to start

Thx, Specster

Sounds normal since before your wheels can turn, the rubber in the rack bushings compress a little and also the fact that you'll get a slight bit a play from the rag joint since it's a rubber disc.

jack up one side of the front of the car, grab hold of the tire at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and give it a side to side jerk. if it clunks at the end of the travel and allows more than token movement then you need to find another front end guy. otherwise look at your steering rack bushings and the rag joint on your steering shaft. if you have headers you may have over-heated the rag joint and introduced some slop. a little is normal but 1/2 a turn is too much.

I have stock rack bushings and stock steering shaft and if I jerk the wheel side to side while in motion it'll put me into the damned wall. If you have the kind of slop that would be problematic, you'd also have a nearly impossible task on your hands just trying to make it steer in a straight line.
