Need some knowledge
Can someone explain to me what "crate engines" are? Complete engines basically?? Better than long/shortblocks? Everything you need? Also which is better SOHC or DOHC and what are there differences??
#2
oooooooooooooooook.
a crate engine is a complete engine, sometimes turnkey (meaning drop right in and turn on) and other times it needs an intake etc. Its basiacally a full engine, brand new that can be shipped to you (in a "crate")
As for SOHC and DOHC im sure you could argue back and forth as to which design is better but for mustang purposes the DOHC builds make more power (stock for stock) so i guess thats what you mean.
SOHC is "Single Over Head Cam"
DOHC is "Duel Over Head Cam"
SOHC is what comes stock in 96-07 GT's and DOHC is what comes in 96-07 Cobras
A SOHC build has 1 cam in the head, so that means 1 in EACH head for a v8, DOHC means it has 2 cams in each head so 4 cams total for a v8.
The DOHC engine your prolly looking at has a 4 valve per cyl design, and the SOHC has 2 valves per cyl.
Hope this de-mystifies it a little

beware... SHM motors have been hit and miss for a long long long time. About 50% of the people I know that do business with SHM have had repeated failures or faulty parts right from the git-go.
I'd look at VT engines, DSS, CHP or Livernois. They have much better reputations and they always answer the phone when I call.

yeah all of the companies thats r3dn3ck mentioned, vt engines, dss, chp, livernois. I would personally go with dss they have some bad a** motors. You can put a power adder on all of those motors as long as they have forged internals.

for the r3dn3ck mentioned sites i looked through them but found now COMPLETE engine kits, just short/long blocks!? im still searching around tho
the "cammer" is the only one i like so far, but no power adder can be put on! :wallbash:

Have you thought about installing a turbocharger?
Just use your stock motor. You dont need a built motor just to have a power adder. The 4.6 engines will take a beating from the factory. Go with a Hellion kit, for backup you can find low mileage 4.6 engines for as little as $500. Better handling and you could prolly run 450whp/550wtq on the turbo. Much cheaper and you have something you can really work with.

if your looking to make power and torque then turbo is the way to go. Look more into it, and youll find many people selling their superchargers to put on a turbo.
If your that dead serious about finding a built motor, why not just buy a new or used 03/04 Cobra motor??? You can find one for prolly cheaper than the crate engine itself without a blower. Its ALL forged, able to handle over 800whp with fuel upgrades, and best of all its topped off with a pretty capable blower. There are ported eaton cobras with nitrous making more power than some kenne bell guys.
I really think the turbo would be your best route for power though. The whole thing about how SCs are better for mustangs has been proven very wrong.

how about this... learn what it is you actually want, what it takes to make that a reality and learn the fundamentals of the modern internal combustion engine. This isn't rocket science.
The difference between the two Bennet motors was the block and probably the internals. Dart blocks are mega strong race blocks, sportsman blocks have been known to break into two large chunks at over 500hp.
neither of those engines is appropriate for your car. For 1, they're pushrods and 2 10grand on a motor says you'd better know damned good and well why it cost 10 grand.
Give us a real budget. How much do you have to spend right now? What do you want out of the car? Drag, open track, autocross, street only, etc... Once we have that, all this speculation and semi-information will stop and we'll find you a solution.
