I had a 1998 Buick Regal GS. My tranny would do soemthing similar. Right around that same RPM it would kinda jump, and jolt around almost like grinding gears. Some times it would switch, others it would lag a little. The tranny was done for and we sold the car. I wasnt too familiar with cars then so the only thing I could say was the transmission blew out. I don't know if changing synchros would help out on your friends car. But even then I think you would be looking around 1000 bux.

did you recently do anything to the car, it might just be going into shift-shock to reprogram the computer to adjust the shifting patterns?

I'd take it too a shop. But be careful, dont let them tell you that you NEED a new tranny, try and find out the exact problem and see if you can just rebuild that part.

you need the code to help figure out the problem. It could be anything from a broken valve, blocked fluide passage to sun gears missing teeth etc...
