If you're keeping up with a GT until third the guy doesn't know how to drive. Sorry.
Basic bolt ons will do next to nothing for you.

Save up the money, get a set of gears and a posi and a tuner.

After that, I'd be looking at a type of power adder turbo/supercharger/nitrous or doing heavy engine work.

Unfortunately this is true. Our cars don't respond well to minor bolt ons.

If you already have a posi then your next mod bolt on wise would be an under drive pulley. They actually make a good power gain too. Unlike throttle bodies and spacers.

Pretty simple to do. On the v6 its just one pulley that you swap out.

You just use a harmonic balancer pulley puller, which you can rent for free from any auto parts store. Use that to pull it off. take off the stock pulley and bolt new one onto the harmonic balancer. Then use the pulley puller, or the stock Ford harmonic balancer bolt to tighter it back on.

The hardest part is if you don't have air tools and trying to get the one bolt in the center of the balancer out. It takes some muscle to get it loose.

Here is a more detailed set of instructions I just found.

if you have a manual, you can do a short throw shifter. its easy to do yourself if you know how to use a ratchet. took me an hour my first time.
