rear end
should i try to replace the fluid myself or play 50 bucks for someone to do it. got my oiled changed today. (no time to do it myself as of late) and they said it should be clear, but mine was black. i'm straped for cash latly cuz of my insurance and car payment. i want to save some money and learn how to do stuff on my own. so is it hard? im sure i could do it. but i just dont want to get over my head with it.

prob hasent been changed
to be honest
unless u want to do it urself its prob not gonna save u any money
because they prob buy there Oil in Bulk and get it cheaper than u can buy it
Im not 100% sure on this but i think u need a pump to get it all out bc i think the fill hole is on top
but im not sure on the 3.8
i would have them do it
I hear you on the money part Its really lame

No special tools are needed at all. You simply unbolt the rear cover it will let all the fluid out. Clean the cover and scrape off the old gasket. Then use Black RTV gasket maker and put a thick bead on the cover then Reinstall cover. Take out the fill plug which is on the top front on the driver side near the drive shaft. Its a screw that is made to have a 3/8" socket wrench go in it and take it out. Then fill with whatever fluid you like that is the correct weight till it comes out thats it. This should not cost at most more then $20 max to do. Good old Mobil 1 or Valvoline etc.. are all good and fine choice for the rear.

I just changed the diff fluid in my car.
The biggest bitch on our cars is the muffler is right in the way to dump the fluid in.
I cut a piece of garden hose that was the right size, about 6" long, and got it in that way.I had to whittle the end of the hose down so I could shove it in the fill hole. Three quarts of Mobil1 and a tube of black RTV ran almost $35, but its better stuff than any shop is gonna put in without charging extra (and even then, who knows?).
I like removing the cover as it gives you a chance to inspect the spider gears.

would it be safer to use ramps instead of jackstands cuz i dotn have any jackstand things. but a friend of mine has the ramps deal. i might try to do it in the morning. i hope it wont cost more than 20 dollars cuz i have like no money. might have to bring out the change.
spike- where am i going to find "Black RTV gasket maker?" i looked on advanced auto parts.com and they dont have it. home depot or something?
could someone tell me what wieght of oil to use because i dont have a manual. and the haynes one confuses me. i was going to bring it to a shop after reading how to do it in the book. but spike you just explained it alot better than they did.
what other stuff should i get? is this going to be a messy job?(which i dont care.)
BIG QUESTION!!!!
SHOULD I USE A DIFFERENT CAR TO GET THE STUFF IN THE MORNING? (my bank closed bout a half hour ago so i cant get monkey now.)
Thing so far to get:
1. Black RTV gasket maker
2. oil

considering this is what AM sells, I would say 75w90 gear oil:

Yes, 75w90 is the right weight for a 7.5" rear end. You'll need 3 quarts.
I wouldn't want to try this job with the car just on ramps... with the rear suspension compressed, the diff is that much closer to the chassis. Jack stands are perfectly safe if used properly.
Black RTV is sold in tubes kind of like glue. The person at your autoparts store should be able to point you right to the "black RTV sealant." Ask for it just like that.
Actually, thinking about it more since my last post, try to get a turkey baster from walmart to squirt the new oil into the diff through the fill hole with. I think I'd try it that way next time I tackle this job.
You might be able to get by with $20 for oil & RTV if you buy the cheap stuff. Also have an oil catch pan and some fresh razor blades to scrape the old RTV off the cover with. A lot of blue paper towels & rags will also be handy.

Are you running an aftermarket exhaust setup? Because on my 2003 v6, the muffler was right in the way so I couldn't just pour the fluid from the bottle into the diff case.
