Default top speed

I'm getting closer to making my decision on which car to buy. I might buy my friend's 2002 V6 mustang. how are top speeds for mustangs, and how do they handle on the highway. My friends mustang topped out at 120 and the lights in the car started to flicker and the check engine light started coming on. im not sure exactly what was goin on with it but my guess is that its the govenor or something (not mechanically smart with cars yet) How would i be able to reach higher speeds of around 140 and have the car handle perfectly. I want my mustang handling similar to an impreza and maintain high speeds. What would i need to do to the mustang mechanically. I want to figure out all of the parts i need to buy to build the car to my standards and around how much money it will all cost me. Im sort of set on the suspension system from maximum motorsports called the maximum grip box. If you know of a better suspension system let me know, and where should the brakes go, the front or the rear? Thanks for your help.

No offence but when looking at what car to buy top speed isn't a good way to do it. Driving at 120+ mph is dangerous to not only you but the people around you even if you plan on doing it at night. a deer at 120 won't make you or your can any prettier. and a mustang is not going to handle like an imprezza it does not have awd and just isn't built to do that. But if you really want speed and handling don't go with a v6 (i'm not knocking them I have one) find a gt and start from there.

Yeah..mustangs weren't made to drive 140mph be it a V6 or GT, you'll hear a lot of rattling and probably have a lot of shaking at those speeds.

It takes a lot of work (money) for a car to handle 'perfectly' at 140mph, an Impreza STI couldn't even do that.

lol... i ran for tops speed once late at night on a nice stretch of highway where noone was around.

i was actually trying to find the speed governer.

i got to 138mph and just decided this was rediculous and gave up. Im pretty sure i was close though.

and pcola, my car diddnt rattle, it felt nice and tight.

then again, maybe if i went another 2mph the resonances might have made the thing rattle like a camaro. lol

Wow, ok, so i just read the first thread post.

uhh, ok, yeah the v6 was probably hitting the speed governer, then again if the CE came on i would be a bit worried.

I gotta say you without a doubt have the strangest goal i have ever heard of with a mustang...
How would i be able to reach higher speeds of around 140 and have the car handle perfectly
i mean.... what? how often are you traveling at 140mph? and how long do you think u can maintain that before you lose yer licence?

seeing as how that is over twice the speed of the average interstate....

why not look for making the mustang super quick instead of super fast?

work on accelleration, not top speed . Top speed will come along with accelleration.

lol...

God i just cant leave this one alone...

You do realize that at 140mph that yer gonna be passing cars on the highway as if yer going 70mph and they are sitting still?

yer gonna fry yer brakes stopping, yer gonna guzzle so much gas that you will need a 2nd job to pay for fuel.

Hell, one thing you can do is yank out the airbags and seatbelts, save some weight so you can kit that goal of 140+mph. lol. seriously, cause there aint a saftey system in the world that is gonna do you jack **** if you go off the road and find yourself flipping uphill 43 times.

have you ever gone 140mph? I know some people have, but honestly it is stupid fast! you have absolutly ZERO responce time and the car is moving so damn fast that any movement of the wheel can cause you to shift way more than you would expect, and any correction will garauntee put you in a side slide then flip yer car in the air probably catching 15-20ft before crashing down and flipping a few dozen times...

you wwould SEROUSLY have to revamt the suspension and steering mechanisms to even remotely be able to handle those speeds.

not to mention yer gonna burn the **** out of yer tires, braking from 140 is gonna roast yer brake pads faster than you can say "****, there go my brakes!"

If you hit another car, you can garauntee yer getting a vehicular manslaughter charge...

lol...

this is freakin hilarious...

lol...

lol...

so i know a lot of people have hit 140mph, most of them on bikes instead of cars.

the big difference there is when you lose control of the bike you become a human meat missle that hurls through the air at superman like speeds, untill you hit the ground, snap some bones, get some road rash and eventually skid to a halt.

if you lose control of the car you are in a 140mph 3,400lb rotating metal and glass cage of death. Everything will come off and pelt ya. Probably end up finding the AC **** lodged past yer rectum. lol

look i aint saying it is a bad goal (except for everyone else on the road) but your best bet would be to be able to hit 140mph in a 1/4mile strip.

yer gonna need a lot of work though.

anyone know the 1/4 mile times for a 140mph speed trap?

No much possibility of any handling with that type of power unless you go crazy high end like ferrari lambo or even mclarin

yeah... and that is what seperates some beefed up TT supra that can nail a faster 1/4 mile and a lambo.

The ability to travel that fast reliably.

Pretty positive on what Jack's position on the topic is haha. But seriously, is there a reason you want to go that fast? Not on public roads I hope. I've spent only about ten seconds over 140mph, in a '95 Procharged Cobra, it was fun but stupidly dangerous.

If speed is your thing try sky diving it's safer than high speed on the high way cause if you screw up only you lose...... unless someone is very unlucky and happens to be walking under you

Found your answer in another thread. It may be a bit pricier than you want, but you should EASILY be able to hit 140 with excellent handling.

this takes me back to the question that got asked everyday on 3.8mustang.

"What's the loudest exhaust i can get?"

I pray for him if top speed is reached...and i hope he knows the tires tops speed as well.

stock tires are 119mph fyi....please read, that's why the speed limiter is set to 115mph or something like that. been years since i had one.
