Default widest tire on a 9

lookin at getting 18x9 black cobra R (2000 version) and i was wondering what the biggest tire can fit on them. I know i have seen the 295s on venom's and they look badass but would 305s (nittos which i know run alil small) look like the 315s on a 18x10 wheel?

275/35/18 is the widest tire you should put on that rim.

Biggest would be Nitto 305 and they will bulge a lot. I would only do that on the back if you run Nitto drags. Otherwise 285 or 295 would be it.

I would say 275-285 is the widest I would try to put on a 9" rim. 305 sounds pretty dang wide for 9", but if they run really narrow then do whatever. The only thing I can think of being bad is durring cornering. You will have a really bent sidewall, I just don't like the idea of it, can't pull up any data right now to justify it though. And that would be for a like AutoX/Agressive street type of cornering.

the bulge is bad. it lowers the sidewall strength.

Yeah, thats what I was trying to get at. Like building something load bearing out of a bent 2x4

w00t. Perfect analogy.

Doesn't apply to drag radials or slicks but for street tires, hellz yeah. Bulge = bad

so like right now i'm running 275/40/17 on my 2000 cobra R rims... can i run a 285 and be ok or a 295? i just i am having a lot of traction issues and i'd much rather get a set of welds but can't find any i like

Some are afraid to run wider tires on the rims then what fits flush on the rim (not bashing anyone by the way here). But me and many others out there would have no problem running 285-295 on the rears on a 9" wide wheel. I would only do it in the rear as they will bulge and you dont want that in the front for turning response etc.. And many people do run 285-295 and even 305 nitto drags on 9" wheels.

you can find out what sizes of rim are considered acceptable for the tire in question by going to tirerack and looking up the tire you want in the size you want and seeing what the specs say. You'd be surprised how big they vary. Some manufacturers even design a line of tire for use in cases where the sidewall needs to angle inward for that bulged look.

Taking any of our word for it is probably the worst idea. Go by what the tire maker says and you'll be happiest.

A different tire/compund would probably help you out more than increasing the width by 10-30mm.
