Default Can you paint this chin spoiler???

Hello. I'm new to this forum.

I recently bought a Mach 1 chin spoiler from americammuscle.com for my 03' GT and was wondering if this part is paintable or not. I was on another forum and got mixed reviews. Can anybody help???

It wont take well to painting without special techniques and adhesion promoters. They look best in black... leave it.

Do you have any details as it pertains to the painting techniques and adhesion promoters that could be used?

I've seen a pic on the site with one that is painted and looks good...but of course there is no way of contacting the maker of the product or the person that had painted and posted the pic.

if it was me that was going to paint it, i would take these steps. make sure its off the car.

1. use fine sand paper and sand the entire surface you want to paint. (helps primer stick)
2. use a primer, at least two coats, i'm not sure if filler primer would be the best in this situation so go with a regular primer. make sure it will adhere to plastic, read the can. give the primer a day or so to set up.
3. wet sand the primer with 1500+ grit sand paper until its really smooth.
4. paint the piece with whatever color that makes your pants tight.
5. install, make sure you wait a day after painting to let the paint completely set up.

If I were going to do what you're looking to do I would simply go get some 16ga cold rolled steel and cut it into the general shape you want, hammer it to get the curve right and then send it off to be powder coated. That plastic won't hold paint well even if you get it to look good to start with... think of the rock chips.

In any case, I'd go down to your local body shop and ask what they recommend for an adhesion promoter (basically a minor solvent). bcassette gave a great process... the exact chemicals aren't my bag...I'm an air flow guy.

Thanks for the info. You seem to realy know your stuff. If it's done right I won't have to worry about cracking or alot of chipping (unless I hit the hell out of it with a curb or something). There's a few people who have told me that its gonna do so. But I don't get why it would anymore than the stock bumper which is made of plastic right???

its not that its plastic, its that you are painting something with spray paint. this way different than a factory paint job. its really hard to beat the durability of factory paint.
