Default Help! ?'s on performance parts!!

Hey everyone. I just bought myself a 1998 Ford Mustang V6. I am about to turn 16. I am still working on it some (getting a few minor problems solved like a tune up, tires, and body work). I am working on a budget of about $2000 Dollars. Are there any performance parts that are worth me buying? Everything is stock. I was thinking a cold air intake system (any specific brands you reccommend?), Dual exhaust, and some flowmasters...Does this sound good? Is it enough? Can I get that for around 2000? If you all suggest anything different please let me know. Thanks.

Ok, when you say gears what do you mean? I know I must sound stupid, but I haven't really been into cars until this past 2-3 months. I know the basics of how my car works and all but the specifics are still quite fuzzy. When you mean gears do you actually mean new ones like 1st gear, 2nd, ect..?? If so can you give me an example of a brand and model of gears you reccommend to me and how much it costs?? Also what will new gears do performance wise?? All help is greatly appreciated..Thanks!

This needs to be moved to the V6 section. That way all the 6ers can help you.

But what he meant by gears is rear end gears not tranny gears. By changing out your rear end gears you can multiply your torque equaling mre go fast off the line power.

In my opinion for V6 mods:
Exhaust
Gears
T-loc while doing the gears
K&N drop in filter
and thats just for starters

gears for sure ...

manual tranny - 3.73
automatic tranny - 4.10

CAI (Cold Air Induction) - ive heard good things about KandN

exhaust is a must - ive got dual flowmaster 40 series (i think most ppl have that aswell) and possibly an X or H pipe, depending on your budget of course ... thats what i would do starting out

voice of reason here...

You're 16, so you haven't been driving long. Why not save that 2 grand and gather interest on it until you turn 18 or 19 so you have some time to learn the ways of the road. Everyone likes to say they're a good driver but almost noone is. Hopping up a car you just got isn't the best way to go. Take some time, reflect on whether spending 2grand before you've even gotten used to driving it is such a good idea.

I'm not baggin on you for being young, I was once. I'm just saying you should save the money for a while...maybe drop a grand and lower the car and put a nice sounding exhaust on it so you can have some pride and not get ribbed too hard by your peers and then, just enjoy it. Get a job if you don't already have one and save up for a blower and other higher end mods. Don't waste money on CAI's and crap like that until you've had the car for a while.

You may being shouting at me now.

Yeah CAI's suck that is a waste of time. Just buy a K&N drop in filter and you'll see pretty much the same kinda gains compared to a cold air intake. CAI are a waste of money for stangs and really any car. If you're dead set on buying a cold air intake buy either a steeda one or a K&N one. I'm 17 yrs old and drive a bullitt that has some cool mods. Be responsible becuase you can blow it all away with one false irresponsible move. I'd say exhaust(Critical and sounds amazing, 4.10 or 3.73 gears depending on your transmission, and a good tuner like the SCT Xcalibrator 2. As far as brands my opinion is the following:
Exhaust- Magnaflow catback and Mac Prochamber off road h-pipe (i have this setup and it's amazing
Tuner- SCT Xcalibrator 2
Gears- FRPP (Ford Racing) 3.73 gears if you are auto trans. or 4.10 gears if you have a standard trans.
This setup is guaranteed to make you happy. Seriously though i have been lucky and have had young irresponsible friends of mine destroy fabulous cars simply by showing off or something stupid; if you aren't 100% ready it will bite you in the *** and you'll end up with a destroyed car or dead with a destroyed car. Be safe, but have fun you're only young once (that's why i went with my car and setup).

I the interest of sounding old, I'm going to have to agree. I tanked my '67 Stang into a tree and a ditch for nothing when I was 17. No insurance either. About $6,000 later it was back to show quality...but $6,000 took me a LONG time to come up with! Cops also managed to have a **** fit about it and ticketed the sh** out of me...but I fought the law and the law LOST!

Just respect the parts you get. If you respect the car, it will respect you. Even now for some of us that have been driving for awhile these cars can jump and bit you in the a**. I managed to get sideways in the rain when I first got my '03.

I'll agree with r3dn3ck on the exhaust and lowering, perhaps even a new rim and tire setup. As for saving the money...good luck on that one! I still tell myself that! Oh well, that's what credit cards are for!
