Anyone have any guesses on how long before we see dyno results of the 5.4 SOHC swap intake?

unfortunatly when i had the 5.4 before running i never dyno'd it. so we'll have to wait to see r3d do his since he has dyno'd already with the adapters.

What size and length of line was required?

Is anyone with a near stock setup planning on getting this HPS intake? Just wondering if anyone wanted to be a guinea pig. I would get it but i finally got my adapter plates to quit leaking coolant 2 weeks ago ( after a year and a half of driving it).

Any thoughts on putting this intake on a stock-ish motor?

Has anyone run this intake at all yet? impressions?

I don't know it this has been addressed already or not, but I have a couple of questions about exhaust in relation to this swap. Specifically when going for state inspections.

I have a '90 Mustang GT Convertible and a '98 Mustang GT Coupe. I love both cars for different reasons.

The '90 is one of the more desireable versions of the breed. 5.0, 5-Spd, GT, Convertable, Red, Black leather interior (first year offered), Black top. Add that it has virtually no rust and I have a long term ownership car. I started down the path to hot street car, but I am now thinking that at some point I will need to undo what has been doen as it may be come rather valuable because it isn't beaten to death.

That leaves my '98 Mustang GT. One of 32,300 or so black mustangs (nearly 20% of total production). Black was the most popular color. Making it not very special and the perfect candidate for some hot street car work.

Swapping a 5.4 is not rocket science for my brother, his friend and I. We've all been involved in projects including a 526 Caddy in an S10 and a 418W in a Ranger.

On to the question....

Let's say I swap a 5.4 in and also add a K-member for header clearance. I put on a set of 4.6 long tubes and cut/weld a catalytic shorty mid-pipe.

I live in NY and our inspection is a plug into the OBDII port and visual inspection. Will the single set of cats (vs. the OEM 4) trip the MIL light and cause the car to fail it's inspection? I can get around the visuale part.

Nope. I got headers on my 4.6 and use only a single set w/ no check engine light (maybe once in a blue moon but even stock can give you that). The key is to use the right sized cats.

Copracr -

When the intakes hit production, I plan on buying one. I jjust have a basic mods(nothing big) JLT CAI, 75mm TB/Plen, Shorties, Off-Road H. Right after I get the intake I plan on finally getting a Dyno Tune

3ft of 5/8"id, 1 5/8" barb to whatever you need for your heater hose. I used a 3/8" NPT male-male coupler and a pair of hose clamps.

Dan got some nice top end gains and bottom end losses with the Reichard intake on a stock motor. I'd bet you'll do about the same. The upside is there's plenty of bottom end grunt to spare and plenty of need in the top end. I don't know what will actually happen for you though. I'll go out on a limb and bet you see a nice increase with a decent tune update.

If my car ever gets out of header jail it'll make an immediate trip to the dyno, then have the intake swapped and make another run. Best I can did fur yuhz.

Possibly. You can shut off the rear O2 sensors but I don't know if that will fail you in NY (don't know if the machines there query the system for disabled items that should be enabled). In the worst of cases, you'll need to extend the wires for the rear O2's and weld up a pair of cats on each side. I'd chop up the stock H-pipe to use as a basis.

Your tune will have a lot to do with it too.

bingo... the rear set basically looks over the shoulder of the primary o2's to make sure the cats are working correctly. poorly sized cats can mess things up.

Or to just shut off the rear O2s if you have any tuning done..

Sounds like stuff that should be included with the intake instead of every buyer have to dick around running to hardware stores...

The Reichard has considerably shorter runners, an extremely poor short side radius where the runners turn to the heads, and was sitting on adapter plates that introduce another jog, so this intake should perform considerably better all around. Getting rid of the adapter plates should let the injector spray at the back of the valve better too, which should be worth a small amount of power with better mixture and better atomization when the fuel hits the hot valve.

.

I'll send a note to bob on that.

Tommy, could you please do us up an exact parts list to get the soft line in there (need lengths and stuff). Your car is easier to get to than mine right now . You or I can send that to Bob and tell him to include it in the kit. That should take it pretty close to bolt on status.

I feel solid from idle up to about 4500-5200 when it starts to fall off fast. Seems like spinning past 5500 is just counter productive. But I'd guess i should pull my stock truck cams and then go after the intake.

if u just use the 5.4 one off a truck/van it fits perfect. thats what i used on hunters. it comes up on the side instead of the bottom like the 4.6. thats the solution bob and i came up with.

i would like to say hi to everybody since i am new to this site. so now that is out of the way i have a few questions about the 4.6 to 5.4 swap. i own a 03 stang gt that this past sat night i kind of had a NOS backfire and well to make it short it pretty well killed the motor...and it almost made it to 72,000 miles. now to the questions!! since i do have the 4.6 PI motor is swapping over to a 5.4 worth it? to be honest im not looking for a high revving race motor but id like a nice street car with more power than a N/A 4.6. what year motor should i be looking for? i have found a 2000 5.4 with 80,000 miles for 900.00 and im going to go look at it,hear it run,and drive the truck. what i take from all ive read its a pretty much just a yank and drop in swap...other than the intake and a tune.also are the PI 4.6 cams the same as the 5.4 truck cams or should i plan on a cam swap in the near future...ok i plan on that anyway cause i want some lope in my car. i know it seems i have a lot of questions... and which i do but i want to know all i can before i tackle something like this. any and all info would greatly make me and my car very very happy!! thanks to everybody.

dropping in a 5.4 in a PI car is awesome. your only gaining like 14hp but 90foot lbs of tq over the PI motor. since the intakes are coming out that is all u need in hardware, and a tune in software. if you scan thru the threads you'll find almost every question asked and answered here.

The middle of NC, just picked up a laptop so I can get mine tuned, the PI intake I've got is missing one of the coolant sensors, it came off a crown vic, so I've gotta work that out.

Make sure its a PI motor before buying. The heads have "PI" cast above one of the exhaust ports, might be able to see that through the wheelwell, otherwise maybe someone else can tell how to identify from above.

also are the PI 4.6 cams the same as the 5.4 truck cams or should i plan on a cam swap in the near future...
All PI cams are the same. If/when you change them my choice would be Hitech Stage II's.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE:

HPS made a decision to drop the price of the 5.4 intake to: 695 shipped and they've dropped the 4.6 intake to 640 shipped.

Mine is supposed to arrive today. If it does I'm going to run it down to TPS and see about getting a quick dyno run done.

I also got a formula ford chassis for free. Plus molds for the body, plus a good (needs paint) body.

I am in the SE Michigan area.

Wow, that is a great price! I'd still like to see what kind of gains it shows over a PI intake w/ adapter plates up to 5800 RPM. Im thinking of making up some LT headers this winter, I've found a couple sets of second-hand 4.6 LT's for a decent price that I can hack up and re-weld.

BTW, we just hit another milestone with this thread... just over 5000 replies!

Is that where your headers are being built? How's that coming? Timeframe?

Wow. Wheels/tires/suspension?

the 80,000 mile motor never came to be. they were trying to jerk me around and i told them to have a nice day! BUT i did find another motor 2001 with 35,000 miles but they want 1800.00 for it. little out of the price range but think id rather have a motor with less miles and 12 month unlimited mile warrenty. i kind of figured the stage 2 cams would be good for what im looking for. lol now my stall may stall higher than 3200 and my 430 gears may be a little too much for the 5.4 power band.

RennWorks is doing the fab. TPS is doing the tuning and a bunch of supporting mods (fuel system) and some routine maintenance. I have no idea what's lagging them out at this point. I'm trying to buy a house right now so I've totally just left the car and the cash there and I'm hopeful that sometime before next spring I'll have a car back. On the upside, I'm so far looking at being a homeowner in the next few days (barring any escrow/title issues).

I got the bare chassis, molds for the body and 1 used body in serviceable condition (if not pretty). The body looks a lot like an old Ferrari Dino. I'm going to build the thing for my wife to play with and for me to have some fun in. I'm not glued to the Kent 4 banger since I'm not glued to any particular class. Been considering a lot of options... like maybe rotary power.

I'm going to fab the suspension from a generic universal kit and much of the rest of the thing will be stuff I'm going to have to learn but corners won't be cut. RennWorks fields a bunch of open wheel cars in the same size (different class). I'm going to try and get some spare parts from them on the cheap.
