Question To swap or not to swap

So I'm thinking about swapping the TR-3650 in it now for a T-5.

Or get the YK6 upgrade kit.

Any suggestions?

I dont think a T-5 will fit...

If you want a strong 5 speed look into a TKO 500 or send your 3650 to Promotion so they can build it up. Cheap and friendly would be finding a used 3650 on ebay or craigslist.

That would be a severe downgrade. If you want a new trans, get a better one, like a T56 or TKO.

Oh wow! I thought the T-5 was an upgrade....shows how much I know about trannys.....transmissions...lol

So I'll just go with the YK6 upgrade kit and have it installed. Its supposed to bring it up to the level that 3650s in 2004 are at.

I have never heard of that upgrade before...far as i know the TR-3650 has been unchanged since they installed them mid 2001-2004. The only thing i can gather from this is that you may have your synchro's upgraded.

The TR-3650 was initially installed in Mustang GT and Cobra vehicles as a mid-year 2001 change, replacing the T-45. To determine which transmission you have in your Mustang, check for the drain plug location. It is on the bottom of the case on a TR-3650 and on the passenger side of the extension on the T-45. The TR-3650 under went six (6) design changes and improvements from 2001 thru 2004. The YK6 is expensive but is the best way to rebuild the 2001-2003 units effectively bringing it up to the 2004 level. D & D Performance does offer individual parts for all models, however Please give the D & D technical expert the TCET number or Ford 7003 model when you call. After rebuilding and re-installing the transmission in your vehicle, fill it with aprox. three (3) quarts of Mercon ATF. The correct full fill level in 0.75 below the fill hole.
Kit includes: 1-2 Shift Fork and Shift Rail & Seals, 3-4 Shift Fork and Shift Rail & Seals, 1-2 Syncro Assembly, 2nd Gear,1-2 Blocker Rings, 3-4 Syncro Assembly, 3rd Gear, 3-4 Blocker Rings, Thrust Washers, C-Clips & Roll Pins, Shift detents, Springs & plugs.

That was part of the fix because of grinding that early 3650 cars had.

Never heard of YK6 before, but thats cool to see. If I spent any money on my tranny I would send it to Promotion performance and have it built to hold some real power.
