I'm using Hookers and the power they give is 2nd to none. However, as they are designed for racing, performance is weighted more heavily than fit so you end up with headers that have a few close calls in terms of fit. For me those minimal clearances are between the headers and steering shaft and passenger header and k-member. Shame that they only make Super Comp and not just regular Comp headers for our cars. Nothing wrong w/ it but if you are willing to sacrifice some juice for a glove like fit (and fork over extra cash), SLP and Kooks make some high quality headers. However, I hear Macs are also amazing, in terms of power, fit, and price. BBKs don't really impress me and I've heard horror stories about the Hedman Hedders (though they do make great products for other cars).

Default mac vs. pypes midpipes/headers

I too have a question, I am deciding on what exhaust brand that I can could go with that won't break the bank. Mac long tube headers vs. Pypes long tube headers? both of them are for a decent price. I already have a Mac catback, I originally was gonna run a full mac exhaust as my first major performance modification to the car. and somewhere along down the road I will replace with magnaflow "magnaflow" catback. I am also deciding on what midpipe to go with, X pipe Vs. H pipe.

I've had my Mac long tubes since 2003 and used the car as a daily driver for 4 years w/ them with ZERO problems. They sound great, and gave me a lot of power.

Little bit of thread hijacking, no? Anyway, stick w/ MAC, if deciding between those two. Considering the cost of the Pypes headers, it would make me nervous since there is no way in hell you can make a Stainless header for that cheap. The price alone only covers the price of the material which means the header cheaps out in the wrong places.

I would say Mac,SLP,Kooks, and the new american racing headers all are good choices.

For price, power, and fit Mac's can't be beat.

If you are changing the catback thinking you will gain more power don't waste your money you wont. As for mid pipes its up to you as they both make similar power its the sound that the biggest difference. An H keep the deep muscle rumble and an X makes a high pitched many say raspy sound. X's make more HP up top and H's make more power down low to mids. The power difference is very very small between the two so go by what you like the sound of.

Actually the only reason I am getting a new catback, is because I just love the way magnaflow's sound. It was either Bassani or Magnaflow, I chose Magnaflow. Thanks though.

Macs and CAMS are just about identical aren't they and also the PYPES headers, perhaps all 3 are from the same manufacturer? I was thinking Hooker or even the Flowtechs. I know a guy who says he has the Flows on 2 of his cars and with new hardware they are fine. Holley owns both hooker and flowtech. 12.1 is amazing! i know trhe hitech stage 2 cams make 300whp on stick cars with LT's and a tune with a couple of bolt ons. Even a guy with NO bolt ons but the headers and cams made 293whp! I don't know what 3090whp in a #3500lb vehicle relates to for the 1/4 but even a 12.999 would be great and I will have a fresh Teksid, 10.5-11.5:1 compression, Hitech cams, some LT's-wish I could choiose a set but have time for them. Also a set of heads, either Hitech heads for $1295. orthe new TFS if I am ablr to save the cash. I also run an SVO intake port matched to the PI heads so 6500rpms still making power, that is where it drops off so i am told. 4.10's and a 3800rpm stall converter also. UDP's and a DIY RAI/CAI with the fogds moved inboard, a home heating vent as a scoop wherte the pass, fog was and 4" aluminum piping leading oncoming air into the stock aircan with an S&B filter dropped in as JLT usues that filter and JLT makes the bEST cai IMHO.

I have a PYPES catted X-pipe for sale and had their catback but could not take the noise and drone so installed gthe stoick system and now it is a pleasure to drive but I would likely get a set of Borla Pro XS or Hooker max flows. both are as quiet as they get and flkow as much as any. What a struggle MACS, CAMS or PYPES, all look alike. Then what about the Hookers?ood heeader butr fit is inknowen but since tghe motor wioll be going in fresh I could lay tge headers ion place and drop the engine miost of the way leaving enough space to bolt the headers inmto oplace. In fact one guy said he bolted tghem ion place and dropped the motor in, headers(LT's) and all! I almost bought a set of PYPES but it was from ebay and Blue Oval industries and tghey have terrible fedback on the forums, TERRIBLE!

Since the mid-pipe and catback don't make much if any power where are the tests that show the difference between shorties and LT's? Maybe the difference is only 5whp between the 2 styles of headers?

Don't worry, it's more than that. While good long tubes can gain 20 hp (or more w/ the right parts) over stock, you're looking at a gain of 5 hp for shorties. This is why it's pointless to bother w/ shorties on 96+ cars.

I am probably going to get PYPES LT's which are made bu another company and from what I have read guy's say they look exactly like MACS. PYPES says they fit with automatics also. Not coated but polished SS. It seems that MACS, CAMS & PYPES are all one in the same. I have spoken to PUPES as on ebay Blue Oval Industries sells PYPES for $369., however they have decent feedback on ebay the feedback on the Corral is ABSOLUTLY TERRIBLE! Since PYPES got involved I don't expect a problem.

So now feedback on MACS or PYPES. I believe a guy already said MACS are good for power. Look good and install is AWFUL like the rest of the under $1K headers

PYPES & MACS are probably made from the same pipe bender/manufacturer. PYPES said their headers are made by another manufacturer so feel free to get the best deal.
H-pipes have a deeper sound and a bit more low end torque. X-pipes are more for high rpm and some say they have a raspy sound. I am going X-pipe as I am in a Teksid 2V build, Hitech stage 2 cams, high compression(11:1) and some heads, TFS or Hitech stage 3 heads. Plan on a 3800rpm stall converter also. Hope the parts I have to support the cams will allow them to rev past 6000rpm and maybe hit 6500rpm so an X-0pipe is for me with a catback from Summit with the muffs changed out for Borla Pro XS or Hooker max flows, highest flowing muffs and also the quietest. THX, all.
PS: NO thread jacking, we are a "family" all trying to get our cars to run their best

I still wouldn't use Pypes. The cost of the headers is the cost of the material used to make it only. This means either the material is inferior or the design/fabrication is. If you want cheap and good, stick w/ Mac.

Flowtechs are cheaper versions of Hooker as you said. The pypes do look alot like the Mac's and have the same collector style as well. But I don't know if they are related or not. Regardless like bassman said shorties are not worth the small gain for all the time and money you spend. If you are going to do headers make it long tubes or do not bother with it.

How much are MACS? There are a set of CAMS with H-pipe on ebay for a "buy it now" of $579. PYPES are about $400. shipped.

The headers look good, but sucks about their h-pipes I guess.

I've had my Mac long tubes in my car since 2003, and daily drove my car until December of last year. At that time I had a local (non-franchised) exhaust shop weld me up an o/r h-pipe and have had it since. As of today everything is still running perfectly.

Wait, you're considering CAMS? If there's one rule of thumb, never EVER consider any brand only sold on eBay. These cheap parts are always cheap knock-offs of other brand name parts but made in China. If you want to be cheap, just get Mac.

I'm not considering CAMS. Just included them due to the comment on looks and price. Maybe PYPES if they aren't made overseas or Hookers for me.
