just get a 99 or 00 with low miles. performance wise, they're all the same basically. same engine, same components pretty much. they just changed some dinky shat around in the 00 and 01 i think. one of them being changing the waterpump in the 01 i believe. if you want a more latest and greatest, get the 04, if you don't care about the year, get a 99. you'll have the same horsepower either way.

Ive heard that the 01 models have higher Compression ratios due to a messed up head casting design. So, maybe stay away from that if you want to supercharge it, but I went with a 99 Limited edition. I just like that this has scoops and stuff, I dont like how the 99 and 00 dont have the scoops. The 00 spring edition does though, and if I found one in white, I would love to have it.

All of those models offer a modest advantage or disadvantage as already pointed out. I think the best option is an '00 if you can find a clean one with low miles for the right price. Nice to avoid the "first model year" would be my only reason to avoid the '99's and with the new '05's on the road, the price point for a '99 and an'00 will not be much different.

Ford also changed the intake to one that has a metal runner where it used to crack a lot. I am not sure of the year, but I know my 03 has the new one. I think it was 01 or 02 that it was changed.

AH, another good point. The 01 also has bigger scoops than the older ones.

Default year

the newer mustangs still have plastic intake exc bullit but the coolant crossover is cast aluminum which tended to crack on earlier models also the newest ones have a stronger trans 5 speed that is not sure what year they changed though around 02 but best bet is the lower the miles the less abuse the car has seen "lets face it these cars are driven hard"

01 - slight compression change(very slight)

01 - Tremec 3650

02 - aluminum coolant crossover

01 - heads returned to Romeos (doesn't really matter)

you should probably know that ford only made yellow, red, black, and silver spring editions in 2000. you get machine finished five stars as well as different scoops.

Don't rule out a 99 or 01 Cobra. If you look around, you can get one really cheap. They may not be supercharged, but the 4V is always nice.
