Default Idler Pulley Question

I have a 98 GT with an 02 Aluminum Explorer PI engine in it...here is my question:

It appears my idler pulley has taken a crap on me...and I want to replace it. Can I buy one of the billet idlers like they make for the cobras and put it on? I would have to find one that is the right size (definately not 90mm), but otherwise would it work? I see they are only like $65, and they seem to be better quality...Let me know what you think..

I don't see why it wouldn't fit...but you may want to ask Randy on Modu*** ***pot.

I would tend to believe a larger pulley would free up a pony or two. The Alt and Water pump pulley are larger with underdrives, and the crank is smaller, so I would think it would slow the system down a little more...you may run into charging problems though.

I asked him...no answer... I have an ud crank and wp pullies on the car now...just wondering if it would work, and maybe spin the accessories at a different rate. are you sure it would slow the accessories down?

I would tend to think so...the belt would have to "travel further" to make a full revolution of that pulley. If you think about it, the alternator pulley is slowed down by the combo of a small dampener pulley and larger WP pulley and vice versa. I would think adding a larger idler pulley would add to the slowing effect.

Hopefully Randy gets back to ya...I'm out for the day in 5...4...3...2...1... :toothy9:

Funny you posted this today, my inner idler pulley on my 01 Gt started making noise today. Stupid, queer, cheap bearings that they put in things nowadays. If you put a larger diameter idler pulley on, it would slow the idler itself down, I don't see how this would affect anything else but I could be wrong.
