why would it throw any codes if it is vacume controled.

Most likley a P0401 for lack of EGR flow. You computer has a sensor called a PFE sensor that monitors EGR flow. If you disconnect the system ther will be a faulty input to the PCM that will trigger the Check Engine Light. You can turn off the EGR system with a hand held programmer like the Diablo Predator.
