Default 10W30 Oil?

Guys here in the shop say I should run 10w30 motor oil in my car. It has 42,000 miles. It would be free for me since we get it by bulk (Fuchs oil) What do you guys think?

I run 5w30. I think 10 would be fine though.

With a relatively low milage motor and no forced induction I say stick with the 5w20.

I use 10W30 in mine too, but only because I've got a bunch of extra loading on my bottom end bearings and I don't want to push all the oil out of them and spin a bearing.

Some people have used 0w20. Im not at my house right now, so I cant double check this. But I think it says 10w30 on my oil fill cap.

Nope, it should say 5W20 on the oil cap. That's what it said on my 03 GT.

hopefully everyone realizes that the 5 in 5w-30 and the 10 in 10w-30 are cold weather ratings. The notation is decoded as 5(winter), 30. Meaning that in winter during those oh so cold nights that the oil won't thicken to road tar consistency and the rest of the time the oil behaves like old fashioned 30 weight. You can use 5w30 interchangably with 10w30. 5w20 which most of our cars are spec'd for is altogether lighter oil which behaves like 5 weight during extreme cold and 20 weight during normal duty. I never liked Xw20 oils they seem just too light to me but Ford loves them so I'd go with 5w20 day to day or even 0w20 in extremely cold weather.

I normally use 5w30 thanks to living in sunny and warm California. It's a little thicker but I drive a little harder.

until you get into the real high dollar synthetics, oil is oil. Castrol is top quality. Weight is your choice. 5w30 is a good one.

5W20 or 5W30 should be the best for the mod motors, you don't want it to thick, the clearances on the mods are tighter, and you don't want friction start up, which will happen even more with the thicker oils. also the 5 is the viscosity at a certain temp and the 20 is the viscosity at a higher temp, i don't remember those temps though, and the W is for winter. i know people that have over 100K miles and they still use 5W30 with no problems at all.

I believe FORD switched there weight class on oils in "02" i believe in an effort for better fuel consumption? I think they also changed the grade in the rear ends? 99-01 have 5w-30 on there caps! The Mod motors are built w/tighter tolerences, I wouldnt go any higher then 10w-30 unless the weather is like extremely Hot?

a piece of an article on mod motors.

Oil Pump
As you might expect, Ford took a completely different approach to lubrication with the Modular V-8. Instead of a cam-driven oil pump, the "gerotor" oil pump wraps around the front of the crankshaft, which provides a positive means of pump propulsion. A pickup tube extends deep into the oil pan from the pump at the front of the engine. This oil pump has a 12mm-wide rotor package that is larger in diameter than we are used to seeing with the older Ford V-8 designs. The factory gerotor package inside the pump is a powdered-metal design, just like the connecting rods. The downside to this approach is failure when we spin these rotors fast. The aftermarket offers us billet oil-pump gears, which perform more reliably than the factory gears. The DOHC uses the same basic oil pump as the SOHC, except for a wider gerotor package inside.

Because these engines run hotter with tighter tolerances, they have deep sump pans that hold nearly seven quarts of oil. Oil viscosities run much lower than we are used to with vintage Ford V-8s--5W20. Running anything heavier isn't healthy for the Modular V-8 because of its tight tolerances. The lower viscosity oil also creates less internal friction, which frees up power and improves efficiency.

I would stay with 5W20/30 and no higher.

I've seen cars with 100,XXX use 5W20 syn with no problems but all cars are different.

4.6 Love and others with that same question. It is not advisable to change oil viscosity on a stock motor to a non-recommended grade unless you are doing so because of a need for a thicker oil, like excess consumption or sloppy clearances from an engine needing a freshening.

if you don't burn (or otherwise consume) oil in excess, then stay with 5w20 or 5w30. If you are a desert dweller and summer temperatures are a concern, then you can either use an oil cooler or bump to the next higher grade for the season, then switch back to the normal weight for fall-spring.
