Default gears and programmer

is it possible to correct the speedo for a 96 gt with just a programmer like sct or diablo and also tune the car and squeeze a few extra horses out of it or would an actualy speedo recalibration be needed?

programmers will fix the speedometer calibration with the addition of gears.

Yeah, but is that true on a '96? I think he needs a speed cal.

Just have to find the repogrammer for his vehicle.

SCT Xcalibrator will work on the following vehicles, INCLUDING YOUR 1996.

SCT’s new XCalibrator supports the following applications:
1996 - 2005 Mustang
2005 Ford GT Supercar
1996 - 2005 F150
1996 - 2005 F250 - F550
7.3L / 6.0L Diesel
1996 - 2005 Explorer
Thunderbird
SVT Focus
Lincoln LS

I have a 1997, it supposedly fixes my speedo for the 3.90 gears I havnt put it on yet. . Buying a speedo calibrator and mil eliminator's your halfway to the price of the SCT chip tuner, so you might as well get it.

WRONG!
The tuners will only correct gear ratio's and speedos on 99-newer. The speedo is mechanical in 96-98 and can not be corrected with out a speedcal. Your shift points in an automatic will be all screwed up too. The autos shift off of the speedo at WOT, not rpm. Trust me....I have an Xcalibrator, the SCT Pro Racer Package and a SCT Raptor Datalogger. You can reprogram the PCM for steeper gears but your speedo will still be wrong.

I havnt put my sct chip on yet. But your saying it wont fix my speedo?? you say it's machanical. but the dallas mustang one isnt mechanical??U use dip switched to change it. I've got every number of ford speedo plastic gear from gear changes on my old 5.0's. Are the gears changeable in 96-98's then??

Strange i asked the tuner if it would fix the speedo and he said yes. Guess i wont know till i put it on.

yes you replace the VSS gear in the tranny with the "plastic" gears. I am almsot positive the older fox ones are the exact same thing. but i cant remember off the top of my head right now. just go out and toss the one in and see if it fixes it.

Actully now that i think about it, they are the same.. lol sorry.

Speedometer calibration is controlled differently in a 96-98. The EEC CANNOT recalibrate the speedometer in these years, only 99-newer. The plastic gears that go in your tranny do not work (at least for automatics). To correct your speedo in 96-98 you need to use a Speedcal or similar item, once you get the speedo right, then you can adjust your shift points. One thing to remember is that the tranny will shift at WOT based on what it hits first - either the WOT RPM shift point or the MPH high TP(throttle position) shift point. The other thing to remember is the WOT RPM shift point is NOT the actual shift point, it is the point that the EEC is telling the transmission - OK start the shift process- Since it is a mechanical/hydraulic process it can't happen instantly.

Im running a 5 speed, 1997 What has me confused is the dallas mustang speed calibrator is not Mechanical. It uses dipswitches and plugs in the harness. I guess i'll know if it works when i finally put it in and get down the road. Switch between stock, and one of the tunes and see if the speedo changes.

I do hope your wrong. but we'll see. I should've put it in tonight, but i concentrated on the stereo.

I bought a nice custom fit sub. Im not trying to win any awards, Just a nice sound. im 37 Rock and metal is me. i bought 4 infinity 6x8 Component speakers. this one 10" sub, and a kicker 6 channel kx700.5 amp.

Its amazing how this custom sub molds in the back right and bolts through the factory Plug in the trunk. you cant even tell it's there when i installed it. The speaker is pointing toward the body panel for protection. I bridged it for 400 watts going to the sub and 75 watts to the other 4 components. Im not winning any Bass wars. but since my dash has 2 din slots i put a Cheap receive that plays MP3's DVD's, Video CD's, fm and the rest, and got a Cheap 7" LCD screen to come out the dash for cheap.

I ebay'd to death and stole everything for what most people pay for just a head unit!!! I got my nitrous system new off ebay $300, Lower and upper control arms new $140 shipped, Underdrive pulies $40 shipped. subframe connectors $40, Nitrous Pump for refilling off a mother bottle $125 shipped. Mother bottle @ my local gas store was $105 for a 65Lb bottle. 110lb was $175 a little cheaper for the bigger. Anyone live near me in delaware, I'll beat your speedshop price for refills.

Damn...I just sold a Kicker 1200.1 and 2 brand new Alpine type R 12" DVC subs for $300. I just know that when it come to speedo calibration, it takes a speedcal to do an automatic.....5-speeds may be different. Good luck
