Default How to tell if you have gears???

Hello all... I was just wondering because I bought my Car used, its the 03 Oxford White GT 4.6, 2V. I ran a 14.1 @ 98mph. I was wondering if there was anyway to find out if I have different gears in my car other then stock without taking the rear apart??? I need to know because I'm about to buy 4:10 gears and don't want to if I already have them in my cars!!!!!! That would really suck ***......So if there is a way can someone on here help me. If your in fayetteville, NC or close by and you know what it would feel like if I had the stock gears rather then the 4:10 GEARS please give me your number and i'll let you drive my car so you can tell me. Thanks

Bragg

The higher the number of the gear ratio, the more times your driveshaft will rotate per wheel rotation. 3.73 gears will rotate your driveshaft 3.73 times per one full turn of the wheel, and 4.10 gears will rotate a tad over 4 times per turn of the wheel. This is essentially a torque multiplier. With changing gears your rpms will change in each gear you are in, and I suggest looking at a gear calculator for your vehicle to pick which gear is best suited for you.

There you go...

you have to factor in wind resistance. The gear calculator is only to give you a half-assed idea.

jack up the back end under the pumpkin. put car in neutral. mark a vertical line at the bottom of a rear tire. mark a reference line on the pumpkin and the driveshaft mounting flange at the diff so you can see when they line up. Have a friend turn the rear wheel 1 full rotation while you count the DS rotations. 3.2ish is 3.27's, 3.5 is 3.55's, 3.7 is 3.73's.

Given that you pulled a 14.1 @98 I can tell you that unless you totally suck as a driver you probably have 3.27's. Any higher a gear and you'd had been showing a less stock-like time and trap speed in all probability.
