Exclamation Okay, need some advice on radars..

Well this semester i'm running a very tight schedule between work and school. UTA is about 40 miles from my job and about 30 from my house. I don't like speeding but i'm thinking that I might have to go over the speed limit sometimes because i get off work a 6:30 and i have a class at 7 PM and its rush hour around here. I also have class at 8:00 am on m/w/f and knowing myself, know that I will not get up on time on monday morning since I like to party on weekends. So I know i'll be running late once or twice So i'm gonna need a radar to help me stay outta trouble ( i hope)..anyways, whats a good radar out there? Brands and prices would be helpful. TIA

Miguel

PS: I'm not looking to spend $300+ dollars on one. I'm looking for something thats reliable and decent.

If you're like the normal poor-folk here.. go with the Cobra XRS.. $90 and it's a hella good... or you can go for the rich-white-man Valentine 1... which tells you the current stock quotes, news headlines, makes you a cup of coffee, asks how your wife and kids are doing... as well as tell you where the radar is coming from... but a radar is a radar, and to me when that siren's going off-- you don't need anyone to tell you where it's coming from... slow your *** down.

Does the cobar model you listed have voice? I had an old radar that my boss had given me that had a loud voice to it. It was pretty good if you ask me. It was good until some asswipe decided to tear my top and steal the fawker.

I wish i had that kinda money spring. But my college books are not paying themselves. Is there a radar out there thats effective against motorcycle cops? The times i did get speeding tickets in the past was always with a motorcycle cop.

Don't listen to springs! They offer the XRS which is the noise-maker, and the XRS which is a voice-operated detector.

Sorry but $2500 for tuition/books leaves me with no $$$

$400 dollars for a radar would be a luxury i can't afford.

Another factor is if you're driving highway... if you're driving highway (w/ trucksl, 18wheelers)... get a CB radio system.. but if you're just hopping on the state roads (Routes) get yourself a Cobra XRS radar detector.

I have both, so the radar protects me around the vicinity of my vechicle, but with the CB radio I can call up to truckers 5 miles up the road and know where the cops are, 5 minutes before I even get there.

www.cobra.com if you're interested.

Get a Valentine 1, or dont get anything. Everything else is just a waste of money.

Ive got a v1 and its great.

Ill also let you in on a little secret ive learned in Physics class. Speeding in short ranges is absolutely worthless. You just waste gas and risk your liscense or a ticket for mabye 2 or 3 minutes if you are lucky.

It takes like 40 mins to get from my house to school with no traffic doing 75 m.p.h. I wouldn't call it a short distance. I guess i'm gonna have to hold off on a radar than, cause i can't afford a $400 radar..

Dunno about you, but here, our sheriffs use laser and so do state troopers. Radar detectors do nothing against laser but let you know its too late and that youll probably be pulled over. This is for all highway driving.

Your best best is to talk to the cops and see what kind of radar/laser is used in your area and who uses what before you decide.
If its laser for sherrifs or state troopers like in my area, its kinda worthless to have one.

Dude why the hell would you spend the same amount for a radar detector than you could for two new rims? I made it from Connecticut to Kentucky, we're talking CT, NY, NJ, PA, WV, OH, KY... and then back up 81 for the return, so TN, VA, back through PA, NY and back to CT.

Aside from Virginia, my XRS detected the countie mounties, the smokey bears the Buckeye mountie's the Trigg County Sherrif Dept. the CT State Police, a few good traps by the weigh stations on every town, city, county, state road you can think on... and here are two things.... not once did I ever miss one, and not once did I ever *THINK* where the hell it was coming from. Thats something that you don't really care about when your warning goes off.

Think about it, for the amount that they're saying to spend, you can get the same calibure for a cheaper price.

Valentine 1 is THE best rated radar detector in all categories of detection. It also tells you where its coming from. Ive detected sheriffs firing in hilly areas 2+ miles away on a straight road. I can tell you right now, your cheap *** radar detector has nothing compared to a Valentine 1.

Thats like going up to somebody and saying, "your louisville slugger is nothing, nothing I dare say compared to my Easton!!"

What does it matter? Where it's coming from? Is that what makes the best radar detector is telling you where its coming from? Mine has never skipped a trap, not once. And you're telling me that it's legit to spend $300 MORE dollars just to find out where its coming from?

What kind of smart buy is that?

*Edit*
go big or go home in this situation
radar detectors... really ranks big with the exhaust kits and blowers... pretty heavy situation

A side by side comparison, and the v1 would totally destroy yours by a landslide. It wont give false readings, and it would detect any type of radar at a MUCH farther distance than any other radar detector on the market, as well as where its coming from, how many you are being hit with, the strength (distance) of the radar, and exactly what kind of radar you are being hit with.

If your radar detector is so great as you claim, then no one would even hear about the valentine 1. In this case its reversed, everyone has heard of a valentine 1, and no one has heard of your "cobra".

Well dude I'm sorry I struck the 3rd grade nerve... mine's bigger, mine's faster, no-one's heard of yours. I paid $100 straight for mine and I haven't had a problem with it, and I'm going to stick by the product that I bought, because it has served me well.

I've never heard of the Valentine 1 (and apparently two others who've posted threads like this) haven't either, but I think it's fair to say that we agree to disagree Matt.

Well, i'll tell you this much, i haven't had a ticket in the last 4+ yrs so I'll be damned before i go out and buy a $400 radar, i don't care how good it is. I've been doing okay so far without a radar, so i really just want one from extra security so I think i'm gonna go with a cobra. I had a cobra in the past before it was stolen, and it worked pretty good.

i'll give you an example of why you should buy the valentine. i dont have one but my friend has one in his 06 gt. i have a belltronics something or another that costs like $250 and is supposed to be one of the best on the market under the valentine (i didnt pay for it, it was a gift). the other night me and my friend with the valentine were sitting at a light and all of a sudden his valentine starts going off and i was like wtf? why isnt mine going off i thought mine was badass and comparable to the valentine minus the directional thing. his continues to go off and he's like "theres a cop behind us about 2 miles back". i would have taken off at the line if his valentine didnt start going off because i never knew there was a cop back there until he was about 500 feet from us. mine works great at picking up radar from behind my car and every other direction but there was a lot of traffic. the valentine is definitely worth the money imho.
