? for a friend
ok..my buddy needs a new engine for his civic...his engine has a really low idle...sounds like it has a really agressive cam in it....and about every 2 or 3 stop signs/lights it stalls even when its warmed up.....he cleaned his ICV and other things i dunno wat.....
i keeps saying that he cant put the engine that he wants in it....he wants a b20 which is outta a crv and older prelude......but it is considered a small truck engine.....we live in PA and he says that cause its considered a small truck engine he cant put it in his civic because of emmisions....can some one help me understand y he cant do this? maybe 4.6 can help w/ this on

tell him to swap it out for that new OraVac with the continuous suction. That should give him that Evo sound with the added horsepower of the 2hp vacume...he'll be doin 1/4 miles in 4 secs flat...

PA is modeled after california's emissions hence why he cannot do it.
what year is the civic? the engine needs to be that year or newer to work "legally" and therefore the older prelude B20 wont' work unless we're talking an ancient honda... and he wouldnt want that B20 either. Its a non-vtec POS.
Why is he so set on the B20? They're not that great. I'd reccomend a B16A or a B18C if he can swing it. DOHC Vtec car motors, they're cheap (JDM versions must be replaced at like 30k under their smog laws, all those engines end up here)... then he just has to make it look like a 99-01 Civic Si under the hood to pass smog.
Or he could go for the H22 from the newer Preludes, but thats a harder swap.

Cali law just says that if you replace the engine, it has to be the same year engine or newer, so make sure you get that worked out. Also, if he does want the B20, get him to do a B20vtec motor. They werent all that reliable when I was into hondas about 3 years ago, but maybe thats changed now. Personally, Id just go with a B18c1 engine, and add a little boost to it. The only great thing about the B20 is the added displacement equals more torque, and from what I hear, they like boost like the b18b non vtec engines do, so maybe thats another possibility. If he does swap the engine, make sure he had reciepts with him. Tell him to look around, I know there are tons of people in PA with swapped cars, so just look. *Takes off ricer hat

Just do H22. There is a vid floating around of a Civic Hatch that had it done. They showed them swapping it out and everything. At the end they took it to the track. Keep in mind this was a completely stock H22 motor and it ran 13.99 the whole time.

Eh, H22 motors are heavy, and they tend to screw the suspension of the car up. Yes, granted that you want a drag only car, then yes, go h22, but if you still want the car to handle somewhat decently, go for one of the lighter engines. Icefreezen, dont count them out, what other cars can make 400 hp and still get 30 mpg Nah, its just a personal thing, but not all of them are slow ricers, some will kick your ***.

Oh, Ill be the first to admit, I use to live, breathe, and long for a honda. BUT it wasnt rice. It would have been a 92 hatch with a GSR motor. BUT, one faithful day, I went for a ride in a cobra, and well, that was all she wrote. NOW, I would still LOVE to have one, but it would not be gayed out, and I have the problem realizing that with the money I would spend on that damn honda, I would be able to buy a cobra, so I keep myself away from it.

it doesnt have vaccume leaks...we replace all the vaccume lines and all....worked perfectly for like 5 weeks....now this....we took them out and put them back in...double checked and it still stalls........he told me today he may get the b20 and somehow make the top look like a b16...dunno how..but yea..

Tell him its not possible. Completely different heads, and that would make him a ricer. Just tell him, get the b20, and turbo it. Also remind him that if he gets teh b20, the stock intake manifold WILL NOT FIT.

h wasnt going to change the head.....he was going to file? down the top of the head and do something to it...he only told me briefly before we had to go to class...
when he does the engine swap...he is doing suspension, transmission, and everything......i think the only thing he isnt doing is a body kit.....just maybe the SI front lip....dunno tho...o and he is turboing it...

ok dont hate on me now, but i used to work on honda's and did alot of swaps before i got my mustang....The B20 block is a strong block mainly used now for the frankinstien motor...kinda like the LS-vtec (b18b bottom end w/ b16a head. A B20a or B20b block with the b16 head makes a pretty nasty set-up we did one in a friends 93 civic coupe and on motor he's turning high 13 sec passes. If your friend does this swap he's going to need the Integra GS-r or ITR transmission, however the ITR comes with LSD and is a bit stronger.
Good call...but it's a costly install with the motor mounts, wiring harness and ECU upgrade altho in the end....look out.
An H22 would be great like but like Matt said...they are heavy and you creak axles too easy with them due to the civic frontend is narrower than the 'Lude.
swap the k20 and call it a day.

Also, what engine is in his car now? stock SOHC 1.6 if so check the distributer and see if the timing has been retard on it (the distributer will be tilted alll the way forward if so then tilt it towards the back of the engine) also theres a screw like recessed on the throttle body...check and make sure thats not turned all the way in that restricts your air flow in.
